I saw the posting from Larry and Coreen on the Ceylon Civil Service. Can someone please look up my relative William Elliott who worked for the government in Colombo in the 1840's? I would love to know what he did and when he came to Ceylon. Thanks! Beverly
" I am particularly keen to know what this family's tea interests were in
I have fairly extensive family interests in Ceylon at this time and I have always found that the various directories are quite helpful - up to a point. It can be a problem to find the directories though we are fortunate to have some earlier ones. Some directories are available on line and they are usually fairly good on teaplanters.
Not much but Sri Lanka / Ceylon is not the easiest place to research.

Subject: [SRILANKA] BYRNE & RAVEN
I am trying to find information on my gggrandfather Henry BYRNE who was a civil engineer in Ceylon in the 1850s -1870s. He married Charlotte RAVEN and they had two children Charles Claudius BYRNE and Charlotte Isable BYRNE. Both were born in Jaffna. The family must have moved back to Ireland at some stage as Charles BYRNE married in Dublin before emigrating to South Africa in the 1880s.
Any information at all on Henry and Charlotte BYRNE would be greatly appreciated, or suggestions as to sites covering Ceylon in the mid 1800s.
