I'm new to the list and looking for info on Michael & Elizabeth Barry..
Their son Ernest George Barry - my ggfather - was born in Candy Ceylon in 1876.
NO further info available.
Am trying to find occupation, etc of Micheal
At long last I have managed to locate another piece to the jig-saw of the
GRAY family tree.
Prepare yourself for a shock as we are definitely related through your G G
Grandmother Eliza and you have hundreds of relatives through that link.
Eliza's parents were Capt French Gray and Ursula Theodora Mooyart (my
paternal G G Grandparents). They had 7 children:
Sally b 26/07/1806
Humphrey b 29/08/1811 d 10/11/1866
French b 06/05/1815* d 25/04/1874 (my G Grandfather)
Eliza b 06/12/1815* d 30/07/1854
* Query on dates of birth?
Sarah b 08/10/1816
Caroline b 13/12/1817
The only information I have on the marriage of Eliza and James was that they
had one son: Hans Charles CAULFIELD (No further information. Perhaps you
could fill me in.)
We have plenty more information on the family tree, mainly on my direct
ancestors. Perhaps I shall be able to run off some details and send it by
post, but I still have a lot of work to do. Just tried doing a family Group
Chart for French and it ran into over 120 pages.
All (or most) of the descendants of French and Ursula were born in Asia,
(Ceylon, Malaya and India) upto my generation. I was born in India. The
last of the very Chota Raj. Ha! Ha!
I have quite a few nephews etc in Oz and NZ. Mainly my eldest sister's (now
deceased) children. (HORNSBY) and my eldest brother's (also deceased) family
who live in Perth WA.
Also one of my mother's sisters married a Canadian and there is now a
thriving community of them out there. They are the Facey-Crowthers.
There is also quite a bit about some of our ancestors in a book about
Tasmania. See St Paul's Plains - AVOCA - 1834-1984. A Brief History of the
Capt French Grays G Grandfather was a Major (later Colonel) in Cromwell's
Army and went out to Ireland in 1649 and settled there. We haven't had any
luck in tracing the Colonel's other grandson who at is remained in Ireland.
Perhaps something will turn up.
I had a number of contacts as a result of my message on the Sri Lankan Web
Page so if you don't mind, I shall send copies to them and my son and
sister-in-law for Info.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Victor/Gay/Jennifer/Joan - I will be in touch ASAP. Thanks for
My name is Richard Gray and I am a descendant of Capt French Gray (Married Ursula Mooyart - 1805 in Ceylon) - I would if possible like to get hold of a copy of the book mentioned in the subject box above. We managed to get copies of a few pages from the book from India House, London a few years ago but have been unable to obtain a copy of the book.
Any information concerning descendants of the above mentioned French Gray would be very much appreciated.
