Subject: Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA] Anglican Registers Diocese of Port Elizabeth
Thursday, April 26, 2012, 8:35:12 AM, you asked:
PM> Are there any Anglican Church records for Port Elizabeth?
A couple of years ago, when eGGSA was finding out what registers it might be
able to have photographed, we received the following information from one of
the volunteers who works with those records in the diocese:
The Diocese of PE is enormous as it stretches to Cradock, with
everything inbetween and east as far as Alexandria (near Port
Alfred). ALL the registers of the whole Diocese are held in the
archives in a fireproof strong room at the Diocesan Offices here in
PE and they are open to handle queries every Tuesday morning. The
Bishop was not at all keen to allow the LDS to have access to the
records but that was not the only reason for not allowing access as
far as I can tell.
The Archives has been busy photographing all the records to ensure
that there is a "backup" in the event of any mishap etc., and the
project is still underway.
The efficient service rendered by this church archives is such that
anyone can be assured that a thorough search is made for a VERY
small fee and with the photographing being done as well I think
that this Diocese records are about as safe as it is possible to
The Archives would be delighted to have requests sent to them and
are always keen to help.
