As someone who has visited the show at the Royal Horticultural Hall for the
past several years, I have sometimes gone on Sat, more often on Sun - and
always as a single visitor not part of a couple. I have found in the past that
when I went on Sat - the crowds were sometime so great that it was impossible to
get close enough to some of the stands I wished to visit. By compressing
everyone into one day, it seems to me that this problem will be even greater. I
understand the economics of shortening the show to 1 day - but from a
visitor's point of view, think this is regretable. Not only will the crowds - and
thus the discomfort - be greater, but it is seemingly threatened to penalize
those of us who do not come with a companion. As my genealogical interests lie
across many counties and countries, this show has always been a good way for me
to cover lots of bases in one go - but now, if it is to be too uncomfortable
to attend - I may reconsider attending in the future.
Whether or not the Show is a one day or a two day event, there is
another aspect, that some of the participating societies have, very
frequently, commented upon. It is worth mentioning that all of us who
run the show, in any capacity and that includes the people on all the
FHS stands, are doing it in our spare time.
Perhaps we would not be debating some of these points if more people
within the family history world would give up their time to help both
the SoG and the other local societies.
