William Richmond alias Webb of Stewkley Grange, Buckinghamshire was
(according to various websites) the grandson of William Richmond of
Drayton Foliot, Berkshire and Alice Webb of the same. He is listed in
the 1634 Bucks Visitation here;
Allegedly William Richmond added the Webb alias as a condition of his
marriage to Alice.
The Victoria County History of Bucks states that Stewkley Grange was
alienated (i.e. sold) to William Webb in 1566 and, after a bit of toing
and froing, passed to his son & heir John who alienated it in 1590 to
Mary May, widow;
From c.1565 a husbandman called John Leno (Lennowe, Lino, etc) is
recorded 3 miles west of Stewkley Grange in Swanbourne and was buried
there on 19 May 1590. At least two of his sons became referred to as
"Leno alias Webb" as were their families until c.1700, which is
arguably a long time to keep using an alias.
1) Is there a connection between the Richmond and Leno neighbours for
the shared "alias Webb" or is it just coincidence?
2) What became of John Richmond als Webb?
3) Who was Mary May?
4) Are there any traces of the Leno family in the area before 1565?
(Swanbourne Parish Records only seem to survive from 1565)
