How about Merchant Navy? or any more affluent family owning and sailing
their own ship?

Subject: [SOG-UK] Early 18th-century 'Captain'.
Who would have been described in Burial records, and on their
"Captain" in the period c.1700 - c.1740 in England. Gentlemen, father and
son in Sussex/Surrey, who both died in their sixties, I have not been
to find them in Royal Navy, Trinity House or East India Company records.
Does that just leave the regular army and the militia; and did army
with the relatively low retired rank of Captain, style themselves as such
those days? If so, where's the best place to look?
