Because the 1939 Register was repurposed as the NHS Central Register, updates continued
into the 1980s.
Different regions computerised at different times, and supposedly the project wasn't
until 1991. However I don't recall seeing a date more recent than the mid-80s.

probably in the last 40's or early 50's, but i recently came across an
entry for a girl who was born in 1924 and at school when the register
was created, and it has been annotated with her married surname (as
was the norm). But in this case her marriage was actually in late

and of course this does provide another clue to marriage name changes
- the question is then, for how long was it actually maintained?
