>This doesn't help if you're looking at a film/fiche, and
point about having slightly more elbow room in the new building
viewers is well made.<<
Let me tell you a true story.
Some time ago I wrote in the Suggestion Book (when we had one) that there
was too little space between the GRO readers to be able to put the large
folders of fiche down. I suggested one of the other readers be moved. Mr
Camp sceptically asked me where to, so I told him. (No, not there! <g>).
I had done my homework, seen where another reader could be placed and lo
and behold, next time I went in, it had been done.
Reading your message, I have just realised that when they got an extra
reader, they must have thought, "Now if we move all the GRO readers closer
together, we can get an extra one on the end!" Back to square one!!
>Do you remember the punishment cells in the basement of the old
building in Chancery Lane for looking at the census?<<
Yes, and I liked it there! You could see the screen which you can't in the
current building without putting your coat over your head and the film
>The ones where the person next door to you was always sneezing
in the dark?<<
I wasn't too bothered about that either - it was the 'two-to-a-reader'
brigade, holding a running commentary on what they have found who annoyed
me (and still do!) in spite of the SILENCE notices!
> It might be worth asking the FRC for their exact dimensions on
layout of film/fiche readers (or take a tape measure next time), to see
what kind of floor space we need for this in the new building.<<
Good idea! You'll take a tape measure next time you go, will you?
