Hi Denise,
Thanks for pulling all of this together.
I have done all of this except the logos. I will "get to" those too.
There are two SCGenWeb site that I run that I do not see on the state web
site that are quite popular, were created by request, and are: the civil
war in SC and the revolutionary war in SC. The URLs are:
http://sciway3.net/clark/civilwar/index.html (Civil War)
http://sciway3.net/clark/revolutionarywar/index.html (revolutionary war)
You have the Gypsy web site (my family has Gypsy ancestors from
Branchville, SC, which is in Orangeburgh Co.), but I did not see the other
two.
Especially the revolutionary war web site has an entire section on women
in the revolutionary war in SC that I created a the request of teachers in
the state. It has been in the search engines for well over a decade.
I created these two, again, by request. Especially the revolutionary war
had pivotal battles in South Carolina: Cornwallis lost his entire cavalry
at Hannah's Cowpens, this was his "intelligence" arm, and South Carolina
was the location of the first "kill" by a genuine submarine, the
"Hunley,"
in the Civil War, which is quite an eye opener for a section of the country
that even we "died in the wool: Southerners" would admit had no industry to
speak of and inadequate man power. There were in fact quite a few of these
submarines built that I document (with the usual Southern exaggeration,
tongue in cheek).
As you so eloquently put it, only those of us who have deep roots in the
region would go to the trouble to put all of this on a public web site!
All of that said, I am almost 72, and if you can find someone who would
like to take over any of these web sites (except Allendale, which I doubt
anyone would want anyway except me!), and you have a way to make that known
without the counties seeming to be abandoned, I would be amenable to hand
them over to a local person. I find it hard to believe there is not
someone in Columbia who would like Richland County, and I have built a good
solid base there, including detailed cemetery records and available
genealogy records, including the origins of the "AME" churches that
suddenly appeared after the Civil War (AKA "the War of Northern
Aggression," even to those of us with some Yankee roots). If all goes as
well as my MDs suggest, I can do these for a few more decades, but we
clearly need a succession plan for these web sites, as "one never knows.".
I have been changing my copyright notices "as I go" so that all of the
material that I have so arduously acquired remains with the web sites.
Warm regards from chilly New England (I live near Boston in a little town
called Lincoln - created centuries before "honest Abe"),
Frank

I am very excited to make the following announcements for SCGenWeb!
As you may or may not be aware, your previous State Coordinator, Victoria
Proctor, has had some difficulties and unable to function regularly as your
SC. I know that she has been with your state for a very long time and it
is so unfortunate that she has had to curtail many of her duties as the SC
for South Carolina. We pray for her quick recovery and abilities to stay
with South Carolina as the CC for three of the counties. Victoria has
requested to retain the counties of: Dillon, Marion and Marlboro. We are
glad she is staying with South Carolina as she has done some very amazing
things through the years and I know that all of you are grateful for all
she has accomplished over this time period.
At the present time, I am the Acting State Coordinator. Also joining us is
a familiar face in USGenWeb and who has also acted for several years as the
National Webmaster for USGenWeb, Jeff Kemp. Jeff has adopted three South
Carolina counties and does an absolutely amazing job on everything he
tackles. We are very fortunate that he has an immense interest in South
Carolina. He will also act as your new Assistant State Coordinator.
So, now, please take a few minutes to view your new state page for
SCGenWeb:
www.scgenweb.org It is a great look and easy to navigate.
If you have items you would like to donate to the state page, please just
send them to Jeff.
CAROLYN: I would appreciate if you would add me as a co-admin for the SC
mail list. Please also note the email addresses listed as CCs to this
email. If those have not yet been added to the mail list subscribers,
please add them.
Now that the state is moving forward, please note the following changes
that you should be making to your counties as quickly as possible. We will
be reviewing all active county sites to be sure that these changes have
been made to continue the progress for SC:
1. Your new state page is now located at:
www.scgenweb.org. The
previous
state site has been replaced at the National Site.
2. All sites in SCGenWeb need to change your logo to the what is found
at:
http://www.scgenweb.org/sc_logos.html. That logo will need to be
linked to the new SCGenWeb site at:
http://www.scgenweb.org. Please
remove all other SC logos at this time.
3. All sites in the SCGenWeb need to update your copyright year to at
least 2014, and please add a "Last Updated" date to your pages. This is
very important since over the years the Advisory Board has received many
complaints about the sites being terribly outdated, no one responding to
email inquiries about counties, etc. We want to turn all of that around
and we are off to a good start.
4. The following counties have had URL changes and, if your county has a
link to one of them, please update that link as follows:
----- Laurens County - now located at:
http://www.lhtornow.com/scgw/laurens/
----- Spartanburg County - now located at:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scsusgw/
----- SCGenWeb State website - now located at:
http://www.scgenweb.org/
5. Other counties have been adopted but not yet reflect the new pages:
Cherokee (new site online), Greenville (new site online), Newberry (being
revised), Calhoun (work in progress), and Orangeburg (work in progress).
6. Emails were sent out to all prior CCs for counties in the state.
Almost all of them were not responded to or their emails bounced. Counties
that have not been updated in years are now available for adoption. Some
counties may have pending adoptions in progress as well. Should you know
someone who is interested in adopting a county in SCGenWeb, we are now
developing a new application form that will be required of any new CC.
This will help have people adopt counties in which they have connections
instead of just adopting a county because someone will think that's cool to
have that county. SOME exceptions may be made, but that will be fairly
unlikely. I find that people who adopt a county because they have a
connection to it in some way makes that person more interested in that
location.
Personally, I hope you all realize that SCGenWeb can become an absolutely
gorgeous representation of work in the USGenWeb. The state has such rich
history and interesting events and I truly want it to reflect the love and
caring that each of you have for your counties. I have seen some very
remarkable work in this state and truly wish for it to continue.
One of my commitments when running for National Coordinator was to market
this wonderful Project out in the world to get more people interested in
using OUR project for their research, or to join to work on a new county or
interest in USGenWeb. Unfortunately, I cannot market something like I
would like to unless and until this Projects gets a thorough upgrade. We
had to do the same thing in MNGenWeb, and it is coming along nicely. That
state has 87 counties and half of them were not being attended to, almost
the same thing as here in SCGenWeb. I am truly excited for what is
possible for both of your states, as well as the entire Project. But it
needs some more spit polish, so-to-speak, and that is what it is getting,
little by little. Please continue your great work with your current
counties. I'm excitedly looking forward to our updated SCGenWeb.
Any and all questions can be directed to me ncusgenweb(a)gmail.com or to
Jeff
at msgwsc(a)gmail.com or at kemp(a)netnitco.com unless he provides us with a
new email for South Carolina.
Also, as stated above, please note that we will be visiting county sites
soon to check on the changes requested above. We hope you will enjoy
working in the new SCGenWeb. Thanks so much.
