Readers of this mail list may recall that former governor and
presidential candidate Mitt Romney has a Sackett in his family tree.
That line includes Charles Edward Robison who married Sackett descendant
Rosetta Mary Berry.
When Thurmon entered information on Charles, he noted that he could not
find a Whitaker, SC, the reported 1883 death location. Digging further
into this matter, I checked the US Geographic Names Information Server
and could not locate any Whitaker, SC either. However, there is a
Whitaker Mountain (a summit) in Cherokee County, SC.
My son, Chris, is in Salt Lake City researching the history of Mormons
and some Native American tribes. Today I asked him if he had access to
any of the information about Robison. Among the items he alerted me to
is "The illustrious Robisons," by Veldron Robison Matheson (1976).
Volume 2 covers Brigadier General Lewis Robison and his descendants.
Matheson (1976) indicates that Charles died while on a mission to the
Catawba tribe in South Carolina. Digging more I discovered that Cherokee
County was created in 1897 from pieces of York and two other counties,
and that Whitaker Mountain was in York County prior to that date. In
addition, the 1880 US census was the first that counted members of the
Catawba tribe in York County. So, it seems likely that Charles died on
or near Whitaker Mountain, now in Cherokee County, SC.
