Does she know about the newspaper transcriptions we did a few years ago? The Sackett name
occurred frequently in Virginia papers, especially in Lynchburg, and all those
transcriptions are on our site. As I recall, many of the stories involved horse shows.

Today I received the following message from Rebecca Hoffman who is
researching Charles H. Sackett (#1250; see
). I have
suggested that she subscribe to this mail list, which she has decided to
do. I have encouraged her to share more of what she has found, as well
as questions that she would like answers to. I think she has decided to

Hello Mr. Smith, my name is Rebecca Hoffman and I am a Public History
Major at James Madison University. I am in the process of doing some
research on the Lynchburg Sackett's for a living history program I will
be doing this summer.
There was a Jennie C. Sackett born to Benjamin and Evalina in Lynchburg
in the 1838 and she would later go on to marry a George T. Peers of
Appomattox Court House and their home and their little family of three
children and one slave would witness the end of the Civil War....some of
the final fighting happened in their front yard and General Joshua
Chamberlain (the same of Gettysburg fame) even dined in their home on
April 11th, 1865.
So for my talk I am trying to talk about Jennie's brother Charles who
served in the war and there is a bit of a mystery with his records,
mainly trying to understand how he wound up in a company out of TN in
1864 when he was also a Lynchburg boy.
I've tried to contact the two people on the site listed as being Charles
H. Sackett's descendants but neither of them have replied to me. I was
hoping you may have some means of sending out a mass message to the
people of your association and see if anyone else may know something
about their line. A real treat would be to find a photo of Jennie,
because as of right now we have no known records of photos of her-simply
of her husband because he was the clerk of the court for many years.
If you could help me or know where I need to go, that would be amazing.
Thank you, Rebecca.
