The Sackett Family Association website has been updated with the following:
• New members 547 Linda Martinez, 548 Michael Clark
• Added The Sackett Book Project.
A Sackett book is being compiled, to be published on completion as an e-book. The book will contain genealogical sketches of all known early Sacketts up to the generation that includes the grandchildren of Simon Sackett the colonist, with further generations added in subsequent editions.
The book will present the records in a logical genealogical sequence, enabling the reader to trace the history of the family through time, generation by generation.
The Sackett Book Project page lists those Sacketts so far identified for inclusion in the book, arranged in the order of the book. Names are linked to person pages, and there are "Previous | Next | Index" links on each individual's page.
See Change Log for all updates to the website.

Description and history
State records indicate that copper was discovered at this site on the
west side of Talcott Mountain, then part of Simsbury, in 1705. A mine
was in operation in 1707, created by digging a vertical shaft and
tunneling horizontally, with additional vertical shafts dug for
ventilation. The mine operated until 1745. About half of the extant
tunnels can be seen.
The Colony of Connecticut then converted the tunnel network into a
prison, naming it after London's Newgate Prison. The first prisoner
for whom the state has surviving documentation, John Hinson, was
committed for burglary in 1773, and escaped in 1774. During the
American Revolutionary War, the prison was used to house Loyalists who
fought against independence, as well as British prisoners of war. During
this time the holding areas in the mines became known as "Hell", and the
prisoners were employed as miners (although this turned out to be

mines "a state prison for the reception of British prisoners
of war, and for the purpose of retaliation ;" and asked from
the Governor of this state a pkm and estimates of expense.
Governor Trumbull laid the matter before the General
Assembly, who assented to the proposition, and requested
him to furnish for Congress the plan and estimates required.
What these were, do not appear, but the subject was drop-
ped, probably for the reason that soon after this time a ter-
mination of the war was anticipated.
Mention has already been made of the confinement of
tories in this prison. No person of this description was
imprisoned here until 1780, when an Act was passed author-
ising' the superior court to sentence to confinement in New-
gate, such persons as should be convicted of certain specified
crimes against the g'overnnient not amounting to treason,
but which consisted of certain overt acts deemed prejudicial
to the cause of independenee. Courts Mai tial too, exercised
the power of sentencing to this prison persons found guilty
of similar ollenses. The whole number of persons, called
tories, imprisoned, did not, it is believed, exceed forty. At
one time there were upwards of twenty in the prison, all of
whom, as before stated, escaped on the 18th of May 1781.
Among them were persons of some note and distinction.
The leader of this rebellion was a Captain Peter Sackett,
who had rendered himself notorious, as well as extremely
obnoxious, by his adherence to the cause of the British

This man was one of the thirty who were en-
gaged in a bloody contest with the guard, and he
made his escape at that time. The imprisoned
Tories were not without sympathisers, and spiritual
comforters. The Rev'd Roger Viets, an Episcopal
clergyman, occasionally expounded the gospel
to them, and taught them the gospel precept.
Honor the King. His reverence was a noted good
liver among the people, and besides what was
given to him in donations, he received annually
40 pounds from the established Church of Eng-
land. American liberty becoming at length so
popular, and treason so opprobrious, he finally
took sudden leave, and emigrated to the British
dominions of Nova Scotia, where his descendants
now reside in respectable circumstances.

Significant changes to Sackett-tree.org database for August 2016
Added a photo of Augusta McDonald (#14696); added census data.
Added photos of Vernor Martin Sackett (#1011) and Sheldon F. Sackett
Added birth and death information for Edna Katherine Morgan (#41226),
wife of Forrie Charles Sackett (#41218), who is the son of Edward H.
Sackett (#13417). Added Edna’s second husband, Evander John Deuvee
(1894-1974). A 1938 WW I veteran’s claim indicates that Forrie was
living in Pennsylvania while Edna was living in Riverside, California.
That claim also identified three minor children: Myrna, Daniel, and
Esther. A fourth child, Edward Franklin, born 1928, died in Ohio in
1928. In 1930, Edna and Forrie are boarders in in Cleveland, with no
children listed. But by 1940 Edna and children cannot be found, at least
not in the same household. A search of 1940 census records appears to
show the children living in separate homes as boarders; at least that is
my theory. It seems confirmed because a Social Security application for
Daniel Arthur Sackett, son of Fory C Sackett and Tina C Morgan indicates
that Daniel was b. 8 Feb 1930 (sic), which matches the date of a Daniel
Sackett, age 9 in 1940, and an Ohio birth record for a Daniel A Sackett
b. 8 Feb 1932. Daniel’s obituary has been added and agrees with the 1932
birth date. Added Daniel’s wife and four children. In 1947 and 1950, all
three of Forrie’s children are attending Roseville High School in
Roseville, Placer County, California.
Added census data for the family of William Webster Sackett (#20779).
Added census data for the family of Cassius Morrell Sackett (#20793).

Added spouse and family for Victor G. Sackett (#20802).
Added parents, census, and death information for John R. Hussey
(#40979), second spouse of T. Zona Quinn (#40912), daughter of Alexander
Added census and death information to Missouri May Steed (#7317); added
information about her husband, Clarence Bryant (#7318), and added children.
Added death information for Letitia Jane Steed (#7320) and Duncan

Added spouse and descendants to Cora Frances Sackett (#22956). Much of
these data were researched by Thurmon King.

additional events for him and his immediate family.

Fillmore, provided by Mike Basile.
Added burial locations and related information for the family of Solomon
Sackett (#7887) and Melissa Fargo (#7888), and their sons, provided by
Thurmon King. Added image of Solomon. Added census and burial
information about the sons’ wives, parents, and children.
Updated birth and death information for Azariah Sackett (#5700). Added
Added census data for Socrates Sacket (#5809) and his family. Added and
corrected death dates for several family members. Added census data,
