That would be great. There is always a chance that a news article you
bring info from some historian that we do not know about.
Perhaps sending a press release after the meeting in order to include
our best current knowledge could point out the group has been organized
and is planning a summer meeting and welcoming participation by
professional and amateurs.
If this was the largest battle of the Rev War in terms of people
captured (especially as a percentage of area population), our effort to
collect the history of the Ruddles and Martin are signficant. Perhaps
100,000 to one million Americans are descended from the people who were
in that area at the time of the attack or in some way affected by the
attack. This attack was a major event in the eyes of the British
planners.

Sorry about that...
He said that AP is always interested in that type of story. Reading about the
reunion after the fact will pique interest for folks about the reunion in
2000, but for this year we must think of a few things we can do now. I would
suggest a flyer of such being made up and faxed or emailed to the
history/genealogy dept of all libraries.
I am checking with the Detroit PBS stations to see if they have done a
documentary about Ft Detroit and perhaps have anything about our kin being
there. And because Ft Detroit was British at that time, I will check in
Windsor, ( across the river from Detroit) and Ft Malden, which is
approximately 15 miles south of Windsor. I do not know if Ft Malden was there
in 1780. but it was there for the War of 1812. They have Tecumseh's personal
things there and rotate the display in the Ft's museum.
I will assume you will approve of me going ahead with this endeavor. I don't
want to step on anyone's toes, so please advise me if someone is already doing
some of this.
I would like for you to write the synopsis and etc Tim, my friend, requested
and I can get it to him. Getting started on this now, AP can give us an idea
of what they will require of us in the way of information.

Don,
I'm planning a trip to Detroit for that very thing, but not sure I'll get
there before we meet for lunch. Thought of checking at Defiance, when I find
if that was for certain the Fort they stopped at, and Sandusky if they did go
by boat. Thought the information they may have in Detroit would verify their
mode of travel.
Also, my grandmother, Sarah Berry's youngr brother was a historian. I have
read some of his writings in our library history/genealogy department. It is
a very old book, published in 1842, and , as you may imagine, not on the
shelf. Because it contained the articles written by an uncle about my
grandmother's family, I was allowed to photo copy some of those pages. I want
to delve deeper in that book! Would certainly be worth investing in a fruit
basket for the librarian and other workers in the dept. Will advise you of
further findings.

Don,
Thanks for making an effort for me. Hate being a nuisance, If one of my sons
can be off the Sat. they would come along, but in case they can't I'd like a
back up.
I have a very low blood pressure (averages 92/68 or there abouts) and when it
drops, you can imagine I'm not safe to be on the road, so I don't drive when
it is yoyoing.
The prisoners were brought a bit west of 75 here in Ohio, to go around the
Black Swamp, then came down the Maumee River from Ft. Defiance, I believe it
was. I know they then went to Fort Detroit. They could have crossed the
Maumee above the rapids and been in British territory, then up through
Frenchtown and on to Detroit.
Somewhere I recently read they had gone down to the Fort Sandusky area and
were taken across by boat. Either way they went, they were very close to my
home. When I'm out near the Maumee River I think of Grandma Sarah Berry, and
what it was like for her and the other prisoners. My heart goes out to each
and every one of them.
I'm so excited about this coming event and ideas are running around in my
head. And I think a newsletter would be perfect. Something to keep people
interested.
I've met a yound man on line that is an Associated Press reporter. Wouldn't
it be nice if a reporter could attend and write something that could go out
over the AP wire and hit many papers across the country.
I think of it as being that noteworthy.
Thanks again, Don..........Lois T

Lois:
Do you have any idea what records are available in Detroit on the prisoners
during their captivity. If you could check around I would appreciate it.
Martha Pelfrey of Northern, KY University thinks there should be much
information about how they lived while there. Martha Pelfrey will be at our
meeting.
That idea about press coverage is excellent. I think I will explore that. My
Ancestor was Samuel VanHook. He was a Lt. under Capt. Gatliff and was called
up in March 1780 for defense of Martins Station. His older Son Samuel Jr. was
out of the fort at the time of the attack. Samuel VanHook Sr. was taken
captive along with his daughter Rachel and Son Benjamin. His wife Hannah was
tomahawked and scalped by the Indians when she went out to find the Cows. Her
bones are believed to be in the burial vault at Ruddles.

Glad you are coming and I am looking forward to meeting you. The drive from
Toledo south on I-75 should not be too bad. You will get a look at the country
over which the prisoners walked to Detroit. When you get to Cincinnati you get
on I-471 south into Kentucky and that takes you right into US 27 south to
Cynthiana. You will get a good look at what the prisoners had to endure. It is
close to the same route. It is a great drive and the roads are excellent. In
the meantime we will try to find someone out there coming from Ohio or
Michigan.

Let's meet at Noon, March 6, at Biancke's Restaurant in Cynthiana for a
planning meeting. Anyone who is interest is welcome to attend. The more the
better. There is a private area in the back and the food is good. Biancke's
was founded in 1894 and has a lot of history with it. It is located across
from the Harrison County courthouse.
Everyone interested in Ruddles or Martins is welcome. Come let us plan
