Announcement of upcoming genealogical and historical society events in the
RI area for the month of June:
June 5, Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to noon - Tour of Fort Wetherill - Jamestown
Historical Society - Free tour of the battlements and the harbor mining
facility. Turn right at the main entrance and meet at the 2nd parking area.
June 7 through September 5 - "Who Were the Whitridges?" - Special exhibit at
the Chase Cory House, Tiverton Historical Society, Tiverton Four Corners,
RI - Tours Sundays from 2 to 4:30. The public is invited to take a peek
into the lives of prominent descendants of this Tiverton family including
the following: the noted doctor who was engaged as an army surgeon during
the War of 1812 near Lake Erie; the artist, Worthington Whitridge of the
Hudson River School who served as a model for both General George Washington
and the boatsteerer in his friend's famous painting of of Washington
Crossing the Delaware and the philanthropist Thomas Whitridge of Baltimore
who intitiated the fundraising efforts to build Tiverton's Whitridge Hall
and Bowen Memorial Chapel.
