Samuel Gorton (1), b. Groton, Lancashire, England, Bap. 12 Feb. 1592/93 in
Cathedral Church, Manchester, d. Warwick, RI between 27 Nov. and 10 Dec.
1677, son of Thomas & Ann Gorton; m. before 11 Jan. 1629/30 Mary Maplett,
Bap. parish church of St. Lawrence Jewry, London, 12 Mar. 1608/09, dau. of
John & Mary (Maplett; arrived Boston, MA Mar. 1636/37; removed 1st. to
Plymouth, MA, then to Portsmouth, Providence, Cranston, and Warwick, RI. He
was a president of the Providence Plantations in 1651 and founder of the town
of Warwick. In the forfront of political reforms, he fought valiantly for
the separation of church and state, played an important role in the movement
to ban slavery, and stood for the rights of Indians, paying them for his
lands when many other colonists merely appropriated their real estate. A lay
minister, he was the author of numerous historical and religigous volumes.
On a mission back to England he was instrumental in obtaining a royal
charter for Rhode Island and in defending its political independence from the
threat of dominance by Massachusetts.
