I lifted this from the Clarke Rootsweb list and thank Seymour for sending it. It relates
to a Rhode Islander. Even though there was no children from any of his marriages, Seymour
is researching the surnames of his wives. Anyone with common interests, I'll drop him
a note to write you.

Rev. John Clark, of Rhode Island, was born in England October 8, 1609, and died in April
1676. He was well educated. He was a physician and a Baptist Minister, and had knowledge
of Greek and Latin and Hebrew. With his first wife, he arrived in Boston, Mass., November
1637. His first winter was spent in New Hampshire. In the spring, he returned to Boston
and associated himself with a colony which settled on Conanicut Island, in what is now
Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He removed to Newport and in 1644, became pastor of the First
Baptist Church in that place. In 1651, he went with Roger Williams to England on matters
concerning the welfare of the Colony, and remained 12 years. They obtained from King
Charles a Charter that was very liberal and which was the basis of the government of Rhode
Island, giving them a Constitution which secured to every one his or her freedom of
conscience in matters of religious concernment, and persecution for opinions sake was
forbidden. In !
June, 1664 he returned to Rhode Island. He held many offices of trust in the Colony. He
was married three times. His first wife was Elizabeth Harges, second, Jane Fletcher,
third, Sarah Davis, no issue survived him.
