Hi, all -
I wouldn't rule out all mention of "chowda" and clambakes from the list
(although actual recipes are going a little too far....)
I found this bit of info in Thursday's "Warwick Beacon" ( of 4/25/02,
published twice weekly) in an historical column written by local author
Don
D'Amato, on the history of the Bayside area of Warwick:
"That was then.... Ortho Boone, along with his wife and son, made up the
'Bayside clambake family'. Head chef Ortho was a legend in his own time
and
his wife gained a reputation as 'the finest eel cook who ever
stood in
front
of a range'. Ortho's son, in later years, has been credited
with being
almost as skillful a bake master as his illustrious father." caption
with
photo from the Henry A. L. Brown Collection.
Mr. D'Amato goes on to say "For over two decades, starting in 1896 and
extending to the time of World War I, the famous clambakes were the work
of
Ortho Boone and his family. Boone, an African-American, gained an
international reputation as serving some of the finest clambakes to be
found
anywhere. The club eventually dissolved around 1924 and a piece of
colorful
Rhode Island history ended."
I've never heard of this family until now, and I wonder if the family
would
have lived on in obscurity if not for the clambakes reference??
