I am doing my research on Joseph Orville Dexter Smith, born in Rhode Island, Lime Rock
August 12, 1843, mother name Betsy or Betsey Dexter father name is not clear ------
Smith. He moved to Massachusetts to studied at Pierce Academy Middleboro. Later to New
York and then to Chile, South America around 1864, to established the first woolen mill
in the town of Bellavista, as a superintendent from 1864 to 1873. From 1874 to 1878 in a
railroad construction . From 1878 to 1884 he was engaged in a Flour Mill business. In 1890
to 1895 he was engaged in mining in the town of Iquique. From September 27, 1895 to 1920
he was US Consular Agent at the Port of Talcahuano, Chile. He married Narcisa Lucinda
Anter Crosby, daugther of William Crosby US Consul at the port of Talcahuano and Lucinda
(Anter) Crosby, Chile in 1868, they have seven children. Narcisa Lucinda was born in
Columbus, Ohio in 1845.
Joseph died in Talcahuano November 14, 1920.
