Susan, The sources I am aware of show exactly what you do.
"The Descendants of Robert Burdick" on page 5, in referring to Ruth Hubbard,
describes her father, Samuel, as
"...born in 1610, at Mendelsham, Suffolk County, England, and was the son
of James and Naomi (Cocke) Hubbard..... His grandfather, Thomas Hubbard, was
burned at the stake, May 26, 1555, in Essex County, England, for refusing to
recant his Protestantism. His fate is related in Fox's "Book of Martyrs"
(Book
III, Chap. 14), under the name of Thomas Higbed." I do not know what source for
this information was used by the author.
The "Hubbard History and Genealogy", on page 54 describes Samuel as the
youngest
son of James and Naomi, but does not mention grandparents.
The "New England Historical and Genealogical Register" Vol 70, April 1916, page
183, refers to Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island, page 106 as
describing Samuel as the "son of James and grandson of Thomas," but there is no
mention of anyone burning at the stake. There are no other relevant references
to Samuel in the NEHGR for its entire run.
I have not been able to check either of the two sources mentioned (Fox or
Austin.)

I am also descended from Ruth, as well as her sister Rachel, and would be glad
to share descendency information with you if you would like.
