Hi again,
I wanted to get that part of the story of my grandmother posted. But, I wanted to
add: I already belonged to a few genealogy "Groups" at Google, but I found
out there is a new, genealogy "Group" at Facebook - for New England Research.
I posted about James CLARK there earlier this month, and someone responded. She told me
that there were CLARKE brothers leaving England in the early 1600's. And one in
particular was John CLARKE, arriving in R.I. in 1637. A report on-line said he was an
important early resident. But, it is not known whether he and his wife had children.
I didn't print out the page, but my early-morning memory thinks he and his brothers
settled in the Portsmouth, RI, and Newport, RI, area. And, he had a brother, Joseph
CLARKE, nearby. (I hoping I'm remembering correctly.)
The researcher at that Group mentioned that some members of the extended CLARKE family
moved to Little Compton, RI.
What I'd like to ask on these Lists is whether anyone has researched these CLARKE
brothers, and brought descendants down to ~1800.
When my "mystery man," James CLARK or CLARKE, married in Westport, MA, in 1829,
his new wife, Rhoda, had been born there in 1800. So, we can only guess that James was
born in the 1790-1800 timeframe - somewhere. One note is that Rhoda's parents
(MANCHESTER / TOMPKINS) were from Little Compton.
(And from my other post, when Mary CLARK married in CT to John DEXTER, his grandparents
were from the Providence, RI, area.)
That's all for now. I've been posting about these families on many Lists and
Boards for 10+ yrs., so there is information in the archives.
