If you can get to Providence, the Rhode Island Historical Society Library
is great for Newport, the rest of RI and all New England. It's located on
Hope Street.

I am looking for recommendations for best places to do general research
Patti, my favorite place is the Newport Historical Society on Touro
Street. Their collection is not limited to Newport, but they have books
and
files to cover all of RI&PP. The Newport public library on Spring Street
has
some materials, but the Redwood Library on Belleview is even better.
You must realize however how crowded Newport is after Memorial Day and
before Memorial Day. There ARE quite a few parking lots, (most not free),
but
you will still need to walk extensively to get to the Historical Society
after you have gotten a spot.
The Historical Society has a museum on Long Wharf, at the intersection of
Broadway and Thames Streets. It is a small museum, but informative.
There
is a parking lot on the north side of the buildings.
