For searches from out of state such as yours, in addtion to the RI Censuses that have been
put on line at
familysearch.org, the census is also available on microfilm from the main
LDS library in Salt Lake City and can be borrowed through and used at your local Family
History Center.
RI State censuses end with the one done in 1935 and , as luck would have it, the census
that everyone would like to get their hands on due to the lack of an 1890 federal census,
is the RI 1892 state census whichy is MIA and was never filmed.
An alternative for locating people beyond the available censuses and for finding DOD's
can be found in the various city directories. Ancestry has some of these although not
every year, nor every municipality and within some groups of directories for a particular
municipality, they may sometimes have only the business directories for a particular year
and those can be of limited value for most people unless you know an ancestor owned/ran a
business or one is looking for the name of a business where an ancestor may have been
employed.
Unfortunately, I've just checked Ancestry and they have a gap in their collection of
Providence directories' 1948 - 1951 aren't in their database.
You may also contact the RI State Archives for a copy of a death certificate from their
microfilms. Deatrhs up to I believe 1960 are now in the public realm & will be at
Archives. Remember to specify that you only need a copy, not a certified copy which the
Archives can also provide at a greater cost per copy.

Thank you so much for the extra information on the CLARKEs.
The family of particular interest to me are the sons of Thomas CLARKE and
Harriet nee SMEDLEY, all born Sawley, Derbyshire. Harriet was the sister
of my GGrandfather John Thomas SMEDLEY. He emmigrated to Australia in
1889.
John Thomas CLARKE and family emmigrated in 1904. George Henry and Walter
Louis in 1911 and Benjamin in the early 1920's I believe. There other
brother Albert stayed in Sawley.
They were all involved in the lace trade. George rising to prominance as
the General Manager of the Warwick Lace Works at River Point Rhode Island.
I'll have a look at the other CLARKEs as they may be cousins to my
GGrandfather's nephews.
Thanks again
Darryl
