Traffic was always a nightmare as I remember at the 4 corners of Rt. 117 & Rts5/1
right in the center of the village. Especially so when the mill - most of the buildings
of the complex are now gone - let out. But at least getting stuck in traffic was made
more bearable for me as a child when we'd be southbound & stuck across from the
Apponaug Hobby Shop which always had the best window displays. The American Red Cross was
at one time located in an old 2.5 storey center chimney colonial right at that
intersection sort of across from the Hobby Shop...or at least that's what my shrinking
old brain cells remember.

Hi, all -
Trish is correct - this little place has some of the worst traffic jams,
probably because of its proximity to Kent Hospital and the route 95
on-ramp - these little streets weren't designed for the volume of
traffic they have now. But getting caught in stop and go traffic gives
motorists a chance to look at some of the buildings. I seem to remember
two-way traffic in front of town hall when I was younger, now it is
one-way, like a rotary.

Apponaug is one of the villages of Warwick. In the center of the town
where city hall, fire and police headquarters, the Warwick Museum, and four
churches (St. Barnabas' Episcopal, St. Catherine's Catholic, Warwick Central
Baptist, and Apponaug Pentecostal) are located. It is where Gorton's Pond is
located as well.
The old Apponaug mills were located near the four corners where sadly
little remains of them. The hero of the battle of Little Round Top at
Gettysburg, General George Sears Greene birthplace and gravesite are both
there. It was once a thriving coastal community as well. The name means,
roughly translated, the place of the shellfish. Those of us that live here
prefer the translation of the place of the mighty traffic jam howev
