I pronounce it Ap-un-og. I'm a native Rhode Islander who's been away for a
few years now but never lost my accent. FWIW Oh, and you have to say it
fast.

As far as pronounciation of the name goes, I never REALLY took note of how
we say it but this question got me to wondering.
I had my car in this morning for an oil change so, since the place is in
Warwick & has a clientele & staff of more than a few native Warwick folk, I
decided to have them pronounce the name.
I & they seem to pronounce it Ap pah nawgh. As with the other variations in
pronounciation, the accent is still on the first sylable and the second and
third sylable not so well defined but seeming to slide two into three.
Language is very fluid so this pronounciation may be different from how the
19th century folk pronounced it and may well change over time in the future.
And is almost guarenteed to be different from how the native speakers of the
Narragansett language would have pronounced it. Turn of the century
pronounciations handed down to today were sure to have been colored by the
large influx of immigrants from Europe & Québec of that period and are
probably still floating around, too.
Say any of the three pronounciations given here to a native RIer and they'll
know what you mean & where it is you want to go in Warwick. Of course, you
may not get there unless you're very observant of your surroundings because
we RIers tend to give directions via landmarks - even ones that don't exist
anymore - rather than route numbers :D
