Thanks, Don. I know about this hurricane event, but that's not
what I was thinking of - it was a boat that sunk with church people
on board. It may turn out to be this Mackinac explosion. Since so
many were from Pawtucket, maybe they all belonged to the same
church.

It as the hurricane of 1938. Ten women from a church group were lost when
the cottage they were in was washed away.

I've been looking for the one that included a church group, and I can't find
a thing. I'm
sure I remember reading that they were on a church outing, but maybe I'm
imagining things.....
Anyway, thanks for sending this one. I've read through this link and looked
at few others, but as you said, there is no mention that they were part of a
group.
Apparently, the captain was charged with manslaughter

Here is another of the entries in
www.gendisasters.com
Newport, RI Steamer Mackinac Explosion, Aug 1925

-explosion%2C-aug-1925?page=0%2C2
This does not mention a church group, but the captain of this ship was
also
the captain of the Larchmont!! Many Pawtucket names here...
