I have a subscription to a for pay newspaper site.
There are a ton of articles, so I have just read a few.
In one of them, a survivor, the purser of the vessel
Oscar A Young said he had a list of the passengers
but it was left on board. If I see anything else, I'll post it.
The estimates on the number of passengers varies widely
across these articles.
In an article of February 14, 1907 it said there were
less than 157 on board, 19 survived, 71 bodies recovered
but only 38 of them identified.
Here are a few of the names I found:
Survivors -
Harris Feldman of NY and his wife
Fred Hiergesell, an 18 yr old runaway who was returning home
George McVey, the captain
David D. Fox of Bridgeton, NJ
Louis MacFarland, "colored waiter"
Sadie Galtrup of Boston, brought to Block Island - too dangerously ill
to move to Providence.
Antonio Riesuklewitz/Riezuklewitz/Hiesuklewitz [can't read the name well]
of Central Falls, RI
Oscar A. Young, purser
James Flood, 45 of NY, but his son Nathan 24 died
James Vann, "a colored waiter" survived, but died a few days later at the
East Side Hospital in Providence
Mr & Mrs A. A. Potter of Andover, NY - missing

Subject: [RI] Sinking of the Larchmont off Block Island, 1907
this was mentioned in the last transcription, and I don't recall
ever
hearing about it ... I googled the subject and found lots of info ..
which I'm still checking out. But I'm wondering if there was a list
of those who perished - they say 181 died, either by drowning or
freezing, when the Larchmont collided with a schooner .... they were
traveling "westbound from Providence to New York" ... the captain and
some crew members survived ... one article called it "Rhode Island's
Titanic" ... very interesting!
found this:
Rhode Island Genealogy Trails - under "RI Disasters" ...

can't wait to check out the rest of this site!
