Thanks! That's what I've found and just wanted to be sure I didn't miss something. He's probably Native American and his father full-blooded. I need to be sure there really is a lack of records on them. I really appreciate your checking that out for me! There are absolutely no records previous to Sr. Marriage to whites put them on the map. That's my theory.

Evelyn Beaumier is still a member of the Johnston Historical Society,
and has a great memory - she'd be great to talk to about this, but I'm
not sure if she uses e-mail.
Also - the Johnston Historical Society continues to upload
(pre-computer) older issues of their newsletters, so check their web
site often. I had helped to transcribe some of the ones from the 1980s!

Further on in this thread you mention that you are trying to find a town, Pouriot, in Tarnow Poland.
I am a retired librarian. You should contact a large central library in your area, explain your problem, and ask if they have a gazeteer. A gazeteer is an annotated dictionary of place names around the world. It's possible that you have the name slightly misspelled and don't know it. It's also possible, since this place is in Poland, that it is now located in a neighboring country and has a different name entirely. For example, Gdansk, Poland, used to be Danzig, Germany. See if the library has a historical atlas to help you figure out former geographic boundaries.

I didn't see the thread so I don't know the time period involved. My
research in Europe has shown that after 2 world wars the names of the towns
may have changed and the country may have changed. I contacted a large
library in the capital of the country I thought the town was in. I gave them
the name of the town on my immigrant's manifest. The name of the town had
changed twice after 2 world wars. The library gave me the history of the
town and the present name of the town and the country it was now in. Hope
this helps.
