There is a book called List of churches and religious organizations in Rhode
Island by the RI Historical Records Survey Project that was published in 1939
It is available at ancestry.com and heritagequest if you are able to access those
databases. [try your library]
At this time, the was only one Lutheran Church in Cranston -
Bethany Lutheran Church
Magnolia St, cornor of Laurens St
Auburn
The church is now located on Rolfe St, and they have a web page with
history
http://www.bethanyri.org/history.html
It was not established until January 9, 1892, but the book mentions
there were many Swedish settlers in the Auburn area of Cranston
as early as 1874
The 1871 Providence directory lists Daniel Henshaw as an Episcopal
Minister. The 1883 directory lists him as Rev. All Saints Memorial Church.
The All Saints website http://www.allsaintsmemorial.org/tp40/page.asp?ID=231136
says it has existed since 1846, and the current building was built by the Henshaw
family as a memorial to the Rev. John Henshaw. So, I would put this church
on the top of your list.
If you go to www.familysearch.org you can find some records for the Böhning
family. You should be able to get a copy of any of these from the RI State Archives,
and hopefully, a cemetery will be listed.
There are 3 Bohning listed in the RI cemetery database transcription
BOHNING ANNIE D (LEWIS (GREENE)) 1892 - 1960 HP004
BOHNING CLARENCE 1889 - HP004
BOHNING ELLA F 1887c - 27 JUL 1888b CR002 HP004 is Pine Grove cemetery in Hopkinton, RICR002 is PocassetRegarding the Catholic Church - http://www.dioceseofprovidence.org/index.php?id=3Go to this link at the Diocese and download the documentA Brief History from the Providence Visitor. There will beinformation there to help you figure out what churches mighthave been German speaking.I found a Christian & Emma in the 1900 census on Washington Ave in Cranston. They have 3 children - William, Maud, Francis. If this is your family, haveyou tried looking for the deaths of these children and where they are buried?Lisallepore(a)comcast.net

Hi,
This is my first post to this list, though I have been doing genealogy
research in Rhode Island for about 15 years.
My current goal for genealogical research, and the reason I subscribed
to this list, is to find the baptismal record for my GG Grandfather
Christian William Böhning who was born March 2, 1862 in Cranston. His
Swiss mother was Catholic and his German father was a Lutheran. Does
anyone know which churches (specifically Catholic and Lutheran) were
in Cranston and Providence at that time? Especially churches that may
have had a high number of German speakers?
Also, Christian's parents both died in 1863, she in May and he in
December. I would like to find out where their funerals were held and
where they are buried. I already have their death certificates and
there is no mention there of where they were buried. I have checked
Pocasset Cemetery in Cranston (that is where Christian and his wife
were later buried) but there seemed to be no other Böhnings buried
there.
One more question: Christian's paternal uncle named Christian
Melchoir Böhning married Mary Schaffler in January 1864 in Providence.
Both of them were from Germany and took in young Christian after his
parents died. I know that the person who officiated at their wedding
was an Episcopal priest named Daniel Henshaw. Any ideas on how I can
find out which Episcopal church he was associated with in Providence
(or possibly Cranston)? I'm wondering if that church may be he same
one that young Christian was baptized in. Maybe instead of finding a
Lutheran or Catholic church, I should be looking for an Episcopal
church that served German speakers.
Thank you,
Carol Hokana
P.S. My GG Grandfather had a brother, Frederick Böhning, who was born
in November 1859 in Providence. I'd love to find his baptismal
record, too!
Hi,
Regarding the Rev. Daniel Hemnshaw. You could look in the relevant years of the
Providence City Direxctory. The volume for 1890, found via Ancestry.com, lists
him as rector of All Saints Memorial P. E. Church, boarding at 42 Waterman
Street. The 1860 Providence City Directory, also found via Ancestry.com, lists
him as pastor of St. Andrew's Church, residing at 12 High Street. The directory
for 1864 lists him as boarding at 251 Westminster Street, but with no church
mentioned. A list of churches in the 1865 directory lists him as pastor of St.
Andrew's Church, near 151 Friendship.

Sorry, I am repeating myself here....
Those obits are the parents, but I think the son, James may still be living. At least he was in 2009 when his mother died.
Also, although I sent you earlier the text of Beatrice & James obituaries, take a look at the links I just sent. There was a photo in the projo for Beatrice that would only be available through viewing the microfilm, or purchasing the obit through the paper.

It looks like your Alice is still in Coventry, RI as per the
obituary. Look her up at www.zabasearch.com I think she's the 2nd one on the list.
You can lookup James Bellwood there also. I think he's the
first one on the list, based on the information in the obituaries.

Thank you for this that has been a great help. I presume though the Alice Bennett (d 2003) is not the one mentioned in the obits for James A and Beatrice as she seems to be alive then. Or am I missing something?
Thanks again and happy new year to you
