Is there anyone that is researching the many Smith families in North
Kingstown, RI in the 1700's?
Nancy Tourjee Mauro
Genealogy is the gift that gives for generations
www.Tourjee.net
Researching...Brennan-Cafferty-Capron-Clark (CT)-Gilheeny-Hathaway- SMITH OF NO.Kingstown-TOURJEE
I checked the providence Journal archives and he died on April 3 1985 he
left 3 daughters, Mary C. Taylor of St John, New Brunswick, Margaret T.
Marcotte of Cranston RI and Ann B. Halloran of Brockton Mass. and 3 sons
Kevin J Cummings of Shelton Conn. William M Cummings of Fishkill N.Y. and
James F. ??
There is a web Site for this and it list obits from 1983 til present. the
site is www.projo.com go to ProjoExpress and in the search archives
box to the left of the screen type in obituaries / Click on the advanced
tab/ then type in the name of whom you are looking for. This should bring up
several manes of the same last name..BUT if you want a full copy they charge
$2.95. I hope what I sent avoids that cost.

I too am trying to find a Margaret Smith who lived in the same period.
I know she had one daughter named Jane and that in her will she referred
to herself as a single woman. I don't know if that meant she was a
widow or that she had never married and had a single child out of
wedlock. I am dying to know.

Is there anyone that is researching the many Smith families in North
Kingstown, RI in the 1700's?
Found this in the Social Security Death Index.
Hope it helps.

LISTERS:
I am looking for information regarding CHARLES L. HIGGINS and his
wife, ANNA M. ?:
This is what I know:
In the 1920 US Census of Rhode Island , Charles (36) and Anna M (32),
are both born in Rhode Island but their parents are born in Ireland.
Anna is recorded as 5 years old with other siblings.
Three Questions:
1. CHARLES L> HIGGINS was born in Rhode Island ± 1884. Can someone
find out where and exactly when he was born in Rhode Island?
2. ANNA M. was born in Rhode Island ± 1888. We do not know her last
name. They were married ± 1913. Can someone find this marriage
certificate?
3. ANN MARY (ANNA) HIGGINS, their daughter, was born 14 April 1914.
But I do not know the names of her other siblings. Can someone find
her on the 1920/1930/1940 US Census of Rhode Island?
4. Can someone find the death dates of CHARLES L. HIGGINS and ANNA M. ?
Thanks for any help!!

Finding Mariners, Seafaring Ancestors, Ships and Maritime News
Jonathan Galli presents this case study as just one example of how to
document elusive ancestors for whom the traditional sources are sparse
or non-existent.
Mariners are particularly problematic to track.
Jonathan had been able to find some vital record and probate
information for his O'Cain family that immigrated to Connecticut "from
the Irish nation" in the 18th century, but the original immigrant's
grandson was only found in the 1790 census and then seemed to disappear.
With the advent of the internet, Jonathan found other resources that
showed that Joseph became a sea captain and was instrumental in altering
the entire Pacific coast trade. Through newly digitized newspaper
resources, Jonathan was able to track this ancestor and discover many
details of this man's life.

Nancy,
By chance was there any mention of a Noah Williams, son of Henry Williams,
buried in Grace Church Cemetery? He died between 1714 and 1730. He was
given up to a guardianship of George Babcock.

Thanks to Donna and Linda for the SSDI entries for William Cummings. I'm not sure which is the correct one but will pursue the question.
Is there possibly anybody out there who actually knew these people when they lived in Foster or later?
Thanks again,
Jane
The clerk in the church office was very helpful to me with Grace Cemetery
records. Some of my ancestors were buried there as paupers and although they
didn't have stones and appeared to be buried with other folks, she did send me
the copy of the index cards and sheets she had on file for them. Just
wanted to add that they were very helpful over the phone too.
Thanks for transcribing those, I'm sorry you never found anyone to help you
with it.

Gardiner, Amy born July 1, 1761 in Exeter, Rhode Island
Gardiner, Amy born Aujgust 16, 1780 in Exeter, Rhode Island

Genealogy and Geography are inextricably linked. Many family history
researchers don’t realize the value of geographical resources fot their
genealogical research.
Erin will provide an overview of maps, showing how maps you might not
consider including in your search can provide valuable clues to your
research. She will introduce you to a couple of non-map geographical
resources critical to your research success.
Kathy will discuss the unique qualities of Beers Landowner Atlases and
show you how to access free images of your ancestor’s hometown, and
possibly his homestead, at piperpublishing.com.
Outline for Maps for Genealogical Research:

About Piper Publishing and the Beers Atlases
Erin Nikitchyuk learned to love family history at the knees of her
grandmother. In 1996 she started seriously pursuing her genealogical
interests, which include Irish Famine immigrants in New England, Germans
through Pennsylvania and Ohio, and a stray Welsh line in the South. She
is the former Director of Sales for the New England Historic
Genealogical Society (NEHGS) where one of her responsibilities was the
evaluation and selection of products for the NEHGS bookstore. She now

Greetings,
I'm trying to resolve a longstanding mystery in my
ancestry pertaining to a branch of the Rhode Island
Gardiners and am wondering if someone might be able to
do a lookup on NEHGS. I can if need be do a lookup on
ancestry.com in return.
Specifically, I'm trying to find a birth record for
one Am(e)y or Amie Gard(i)ner (b abt 1804-07) in Rhode
Island (one of the Kingstowns) who married Daniel
Lyman Clark and lived in both Connecticut and the
Central Falls/Smithfield area of Rhode Island. I'm
also trying to
find birth records for her possible (if not probable)
parents in either Rhode Island or Connecticut: William
Gardiner and Betsey (Elizabeth?) Potter.
I have a smattering of vital and census records
relating to Amy Gardiner and Daniel Lyman Clark (most
of which were not easy to dig up). It seems that both
were born in Rhode Island but were living in
Connecticut in the 1820s and early 1830s (several of
their children were born there but I haven't been able
to dig up a marriage record for them in either Rhode
Island or Connecticut). They returned to Rhode Island
(the North Providence/Smithfield area) by the middle
of the
1830s. Daughter Lydia Clark (who married Albert Frost
Briggs of Attleboro) was born about 1835-37. Daughter
Susan Clark (who married Briggs's business partner
Ephraim Hunt Tappan - also of Attleboro) was born
between 1837 and 39.
By 1850 Daniel Lyman Clark (who is referred to in some
records as Daniel, other records as Lyman, and other
records as Daniel Lyman) seems to have been out of the
picture (I still don't know if he died or left Amy) as
she is listed as the head of household for their
Smithfield residence in 1850. I'm still not entirely
sure if I have located her death record but an Amy
Clark (born in one of the Kingstowns, RI) died in
January 1880 Attleboro MA (where daughters Susan
and Lydia were living) and her parents are listed
as William Gardiner and Betsey Potter of the
Kingstowns, RI.
I have checked ancestry.com (including a check of the
Gardiner book) and with Ken at the RI archive for a
birth record for Amy and for birth and marriage
records for a William Gardiner and Betsey Potter. I'm
hoping to find out if there are any records on NEHGS
relating to this family in either Rhode Island or
Connecticut (since Daniel and Amy lived there for a
time perhaps Amy's parents had also lived there at
some point too).
Thanks for any insights you may have.
Best regards,
Kenneth

The records for Grace Church Cemetery are at Grace Church on Mathewson St. in Providence. In 1996 I entered all of these records into the RI HC database which are on line at RIGenWeb. In 2000 I took a printout to the cemetery all during the summer to add data for those burial that had gravestones. I was able to finish about 80% of the cemetery. I was never able to attact a volunteer to finish this task.
