The 101st has had more than it's share of loses. The sacrifice that continues to be made for the principles that our country was founded upon still staggers me. When our friends and family make the list of heros enabling us to continue the dreams of our ancestors,Earth actually stops for a moment and all else seems of less importance. To all of us who count the victories and losses in our generation and those over the last 300+ years, Memorial Day leaves us with intense gratitude and thanksgiving. Each loss has an incredible effect on an ever expanding circle of family, friends and troops of men and women who selflessly "get the job done". There's no way to say "Thank You" other than to remember them and appreciate what it has given to the rest of us. Our lives are richer because of their devotion.
Thanks for bringing this point home, Al.

FYI
I checked the Providence Carpenter book and Cary was not listed in it. That does not mean he is not a Providence Carpenter - as Charlie indicated, he most likely is. The book just is not really helpful for the RI lines :) All my lines go back to William of Rehoboth and are all descended from Jeremiah Carpenter and Abigail Shelden. They had a son Ephraim who m. Mary Rodman and their daughter, Sarah Carpenter, married Pardon Vaughan. Pardon's daughter, Lucetta Vaughan, married Jeremiah Carpenter - they are my 3rd great grandparents on my mother's side. the younger Jeremiah had a sister, Thankful Knowles Carpenter, who married William Waite Potter - they are my 3rd g grandparents through my father :)
My family tree is pretty twisted - and I'll bet I have as much Carpenter DNA as Charlie does!

The only listing in the DAR Patriot index for a John Sterling is from CT.
This does not mean there isn't a John Sterling from another state such as
RI, it just means that someone in the organization has connected their
genealogical line to the John Sterling of CT and proven his service during
the Rev. War. The index gives only this info:

Folks, I have been trying to locate information on Benjamin Bennett who married an Elizabeth b. RI circa 1799 too. Her name has been listed as Elizabeth/Elsie/Eley in various documents, and in one as Elizabeth Robinson.
What I have found is:
Benjamin K BENNETT b 1800-1810 era, prob died before 1850. - found a listing for an Eley BENNETT who may be his widow living in Blackstone, MA with Asa Kelly family in 1850 census. Benjamin Knight Bennett{jr} was living with her and his new bride Julia in that household.
their son: Benjamin Knight BENNETT b 1830 RI, either Slatersville or Smithfield according to various sources. d. 1905 Bellingham MA at daughters home after illness at home in Woonsocket, RI

Hi Brenda,Jean and Elaine
I don't have a listing on Cary, but I'm fairly sure that the early Scituate
Carpenters are off William Carpenter of Providence. My information that I
had was copied via a fax machine years ago and there is hardly any readable
printing shown on the paper. If I remember the same line went into
Cumberland,R.I. too. I have a listing on the Carpenter family cemetery on
Carpenter Road in Scituate if anyoine is interested. My line comes off
William Carpenter of Rehoboth, Ma.who is cousin to William of Providence.
Sorry, not much help with Scituate line

I have to wonder if the listing of Rogers, RI is a typo and this man
actually is a native of Foster, RI?

SINGULAR DEATH -- A Coroner's inquest was held over the body of John FOSTER
Sunday night. It appears that he was sitting in front of the Saddler Shop
of Mr. MILLER, on Main street, about 8 o'clock, a short time, when he
entered the door and seated himself on a chair near the entrance, when he
was seen to fall back on the floor apparently in great agony from
difficulty of breathing. Dr. DOWNEY was immediately called in, but death
soon released the suffering man from his agony.
We are somewhat surprised that the coroner did not summon Dr. DOWNEY, as it
is usual to secure the testimony of the attending physicians on such
occasions, as they know the symptoms better than can be explained to a
non-attending physician by an unprofessional man.
The jury decided the deceased came to his death from a disease of the
heart. Opium was found in his pockets. He had been talking of dying for
several days; had complained of a fluttering in his breast; and on the day
of his death had said he had engaged his coffin.
He was aged about 50 years. He was a native of Rogers, R.I., which town was
named after his father. He had been educated as a physician; but the
practice being distasteful to him, he became a sailor, and had lived a long
time in Central America, South America, and the Sandwich Islands.
He is said to have been a well educated man. He had resided in this city
about 1 year, a portion of the time working in the saddler shop of Mr.
MILLER. He had evidently been tired of life for some time, judging from
expressions at various times that had fallen from his lips.

Hi Jack
No, he didn't make it to the 1820 Census.
There is a David, born in West Greenwich, who is also listed in the 1860 Census, born in Tiverton, age 69, born abt 1791.
Possible son.
My Elizabeth Weaver m Benjamin Bennett, 29 Oct 1734. Have not been able to document their children, but the time frame is about right and they married in EG. Thus my interest.

Hi Charlie,
Could this Charles be related to:
Charles E, b 1853 CT, d 4 Apr 1883 Thompson, CT. Married Hattie A. Chapman 11 Aug 1879 Burrillville?
Hattie b 1859 CT. On 1880 census Charles & Hattie were living with her parents in Griswold, New London, CT.
SIBLINGS:(2) Andrew Lawson (3) Ida May (4) Herbert, b 18 Aug 1869 Thompson, CT (5) Grace May, b 18 Apr 1876 Burrillville.
This is perhaps grandson of Elijah CARPENTER.

There are seven (I believe) large books in a number of libraries that contain
listings of Rev. War Patriots. Also in PA near Washington's Crossing there
is a library that specializes in this. They have much material. Also the
National Archives can be contacted if you have a particular patriot. They may
have info on him. Elizabeth in FL
I have checked the cemetery index by John Sterling and the Rev. War Veteran
is not listed.
I have someone checking the RIHS index to see if the DAR has a listing.
Is there anyother place that Rev. War Veterans maybe listed.
Any ideas or thoughts on this would be appreciated.
