In doing queries on the name Sheffield from this mailing list, I came a Joshua Sheffield, born Dec. 1, 1777 listed in an email posting from a Beth Hurd dated June 13, 2003. The posting was apparently an excerpt from "The Narragensett Historical Register, volume VII. January 1889 No.1 James N. Arnold, Ed.
pp. 193-195 (births and deaths)"
Anybody know how I might get more information on this resource? This might be my guy... the dates match....

Help! I've hit a stumbling block in my genealogy. I'm looking for a Joshua Sheffield from RI. He would have been born between 1770-1780. He married Susan Hoxsie and had a son by the name of Henry Hoxsie Sheffield born around 1798. My genealogy ends with Henry. I've been told his father's name was Joshua and his mother's maiden name was Hoxsie, hence the middle name, and that both his mother and father were from RI, but I have been unable to prove anything up to this point. Any information that you may be able to provide on any of these three names would be greatly appreciated.

I checked and found he was living in New York in 1920 and found a death
record. You can order death record online and I have included links to NY
death index and NY Vital Records. Email me at sls91750(a)cox.net if you want
me to send you the census. My daughter went to Lincoln School and I can give
you an email address of someone in the music department who might be able to
give you info on Mary G. Annin.

Looking for info concerning ALEXANDER HUNTINGTON. First married an EMILY SMITH in 1901. She may have died shortly after. Alex married a 2nd time to LILLIAN CALPWELL in Jan of 1906 in Providence. He died in December 1913 from surgery according to death record. According to death record he is buried in Coventry. However after looking thru the Coventry Cemetery Book he is not there. He was buried by the BYRON READ UNDERTAKERS in Coventry. Would anyone know who may have the burial records of the BYRON READ COMPANY ?

For Frank:
If someone could get a look at the 1865 RI State Census it would say which town Gorton Briggs was born in, Celinda too, which would narrow things down. I worked on a Briggs family from NK and EG a few months ago for someone, and found my answers by going to the EG town hall and digging through land records and probate administrations. One of the women in that family, Lavina Briggs b. 1793, dau. of William, married Oliver Gorton. It's possible that someone in her family named a son Gorton Briggs after that. That kind of naming was done all the time to honor a new member of the family, I guess, but there were so many Gortons in the area that you can't bet on it being the answer.
Lavina's brothers were all too young to be father of your Gorton: David S., Robert D., Isaac, William, and one whose name we haven't yet found who left children but no Gorton. They were more his contemporaries.
I don't know -- but you may have to do some serious digging in town records. There were so many different Briggs families in RI that until you know the town of birth it's nearly hopeless.
There is some good Briggs material at RI Historical Society, on one East Greenwich family in particular.
But basic here: Can anybody help with the 1865 census? It's at RI Historical Society (indexed) and on LDS microfilm.
Jane
This may be your Charles in 1880. Includes wife Jane, Lorena and Elmer. NOTE: Census birth date are usually within one year of the actual birth date. Sometimes completely incorrect therefore you should locate them in successive census' to verify it is the same family.

Frank:
The 1870 census has Celinda and Gorton together in Fostor RI. He is 63 and she listed as 62. He is a farmer.

In the 1880 census Gorton age 76 living with Ann E. Briggs, Celinda not with him. He is listed as a Doctor, may be a different Gorton.
Name: Gorton W. Briggs

There are two Celinda's in the area and at least two Gortons. Spelling or doing a wildcard search may help. Sel* Briggs one way. Or doing a soudex search for Briggs. Your spelling of Selinah not a stretch.
Frank:
I assume she is based on the age at death. The way she is listed as first kin line Gorton further seems to solidify that connection. Using the death date I would try to find an obituary for her or death certificate . She is listed as widow of Gorton. No other celinda's found. I don't know the source of your info. it could be a spellong error. Selinah sounds like Celinda.
Can you clarify something for me,
Under RI deaths, is Celinda wid the one that died as I showed her as the
wife of Gorton

The Rhode Island Genealogical Society (RIGS) research trip will be on March
15th. (Wednesday) to the Connecticut State Library in Hartford or the Godfrey
Library in Middletown.
We hope to also offer the Connecticut Historical Society (www.chs.org) as a
choice, but they are doing some renovations and are not sure at this time when
they will be completed. If this is of interest to you please be sure to let
Helen Smith know and she will contact you if this choice becomes available.
Departure from the East Providence Park and Ride on Route 44 will be 7:15 am
and from the Warwick Mall Parking Lot near Firestone across from Macy's will
be at 7:30 am. Return should be around 7 pm. Due to the rising cost of fuel the
cost of the bus has increased and we will be increasing the cost of the trip
to $22 per person. We suggest you bring your lunch. The library does have a
small lunchroom with limited snacks.
We hope you can all join us and bring a friend. We welcome non-members.
For reservations send a check made out to RIGS for $22 to Helen Smith, 530
West Reach Drive, Jamestown, RI 02835. Along with your check, be sure to include
your name, telephone and email address, which pickup point you will use, and
your choice of venue (Godfrey and the other destinations are too far apart for
the bus to be able to go back and forth). If you have questions, Helen Smith
can be reached at hhsctc(a)aol.com.
