Hi Donna,
Thanks for the location of Carolina. I did know where Blackstone was, but
didn't have a clue for Carolina - at least I know where to look now.
Thanks so much,
Paula
I found this transcription of the Ancient Burial Ground in Stonington, CT
on-line and though others might want to visit. Many of us with RI lines are
also descended from the people buried here (Palmers, Stanton, Noyes,
Cheeseborough, etc)

Hi Barb; Yes I remember chatting about school street etc. It's too bad that
you didn't ask any store owner in the village of Padanaram where I lived, or
my phone number, and I would have shown you School St.
The next time you make it over here, go to the New Bedford Yacht Club
located on Elm Street.........if you go over the bridge and look out to the
Islands on Buzzards Bay....you will see the Yacht Club to your right...if
heading into the village....other wise on your left.
School street starts at the enterence of the Yacht Club and goes up a little
hill.
I think # 12 is located on the left hand side of the street at the next
intersection....Pleasant and School Streets. I live about 4 blocks from
there.
BTW, I wish I were in my 60's again, but on the other hand, I'm glad I was
born, when I was. Played plenty of games outside with tons of friends,
including sledding all winter...riding in a one horse open sleigh....no
salted streets..........sitting in some persons unfinished cellar chatting
or dancing to music while the mother supplied coke and popcorn....commando
courses set up to practice fighting the enemy if they ever made it over to
the U.S. during the 2nd world war......hardly much traffic, so played bumper
tag with cars, with the lights out, at night........no damage done. Fox
hunting on horseback at the Quansett Farm in Westport......I could go on and
on, but had better shut up.
Have contacted Elaine directly, so we shall see what happens in 2 months.
Thanks.......
Randy

Hi Paula,
I did not see an answer to your question on either the Mass or RI lists.
The village of Carolina and town of Richmond where it's located are part
of Washington County, RI which is in the southernmost part of the RI
mainland. On the other hand Blackstone, MA is just over the line from
Woonsocket, RI which is in northern RI. I think (but don't quote me) that
Blackstone is in Worcester County, MA.
Hope this helps, Donna Potter in RI

Thanks for the reply Randy. I'm 77 in November and have
no desire to be 60 again! The last ten years were the
best of my life! For the first time in my life, I answer to
no one, do as I please when I please, etc. and it is bliss
after a life of subserviance or is it ence? I remember all
the great things you mention and many more.....
Be great to see you if you make it over to Galilee even
after the lunch to see us all and vice versa!

I am trying to located my g-g grandfather JAMES KNIGHT before and after his
Civil War service, 1862-1863. He married Mariah Nolan in 1855 in Watertown,
MA and I have lost them after that date. The birth certificates for his
children say "Carolina, City of Richmond, Rhode Island".
I do know he lived in the Blackstone, MA/RI area - is Carolina near
Blackstone? Is this a different area that he lived in? James was a weaver.
James would have been about 28 in 1865, wife Maria about 24
Children:
Mariah, 1859
James J., 1864
Thomas F., 1865
John Henry, 1870
Thanks for any help you can give me with his life prior to 1880 when he
arrived in Fall River, MA.

Hi Randy, I've been perking up every time Padanaram was
mentioned--first by Barb and now by you. My parents moved there
shortly after their marriage in Fall River, in 1916, and I was born
there a few years later--unfortunately we moved away--to
Fairhaven --when I was only two. But I wonder if you ever knew Alice
and Andrew Butts on Shipyard Lane, or Myra Brightman on (I think) Elm
Street. We lived almost across the street from Myra. I later returned
to Padanaram as a music supervisor in the public schools (1948-50)
It will always be one of my favorite places.

There are a couple of excellent books on the History of Warwick. The first
one is called:
FULLER's HISTORY of WARWICK I highly recommend this book it covers
manufactoring developemnt, as well as the whole town's development during
the industrial revolution.
Another man who wrote a lot about the history of Warwick is Mathias Harpin.
He has several books on the area. One is "Trumpets of Jericho" and "Road to
Zion".Mr. Harpin passed away last year. His books are no longer in print,
but purhaps you could use the library systems and see if you can get a copy
sent to a library near you.
