Subj: [NYOTSEGO] Hobie Stone & Philotha Mattic-Hartwick, NY
NYOTSEGO-L(a)rootsweb.com
My husband & I were in an antique shop in Bainbridge, NY yesterday, just
poking around and we found several family articles that really should be in
someone's genealogy collection...we couldn't identify where the Smith family
Bible might belong, or the collection of old photo's that might belong to
someone in the Greene, NY area...but we did see that names on a marriage
license for 1882 for Hobie Stone & Phiotha Mattice...so we looked on our 1880
census indexes and did find their names listed for Hartwick, Otsego co, NY
area:
by posting this, we do hope that someone descendant from either of these
families can go and save this marriage license from that antique shop.
here's the 1880 census info:

My Paine great grandmother is Susan Catherine Paine born Sep 12, 1812 in
Caledonia, Genesse CO., New York. She married on January 6, 1848 in Winter
Quarters, Pottawattamie CO, Iowa to George Wallace Birch. They had 3
children, George Wallace Birch, John Edward Birch and Robert Abner Birch.
Susan Catherine Paine's parents were Samuel Langdon Paine born in 1779
Connecticut (?) and Eunice Hall born Washington Co, Rhode Island (Westerly).
Susan Catherine Paine died in 1878. in Melville, Cache County, Utah.
Dear Judy:
Here are the names of the persons who moved from RI to NYS and became my
ancestors:
ELLIS, Christopher, born 1783, in RI according to 19th century Federal
censuses. I do not know his parents, siblings or ancestors. He moved to
Milford, Otsego Co., NYS and married Wealthy PERRY about 1800. Their first
child was born in 1801. Wealthy PERRY's PERRY family lived in Chesterfield,
Hampshire Co., MA, before emigrating to Harwick, Otsego Co., NY in the late
1780s.
WILCOX, Daniel, father of WILCOX, Hannah, who was born about 1797 in Westerly
and married BUTTON, Festus who was born about 1794 in Westerly to John BUTTON
born about 1756 RI and Anna PALMER. Hannah and Festus were married in 1816 in
Westerly and had about 15 children in RI before emigrating to New Berlin,
Chenango Co., NYS. I have not found Hannah's father, Daniel WILCOX, in any
WILCOX family.
PECK, John, born probably about 1790 but could have been born somewhat
earlier, in RI according to 19th century Federal censuses. He married Mary
_______. Either John or Mary or both of them are said to have had Indian
blood, either in part or wholly. I do not know where John and Mary were
married, in RI or NY. They had six children. I have the birth dates of all of
them, but the birthplace of only one of them, William Orange PECK or Orange
PECK born 1817 in Manlius, Onondaga County, NY.
BUTTON, John, born about 1756 in RI, parents were Daniel BUTTON II and
Elizabeth PALMITER. John supposedly married Anna PALMER. I have not been able
to find this Anna PALMER anywhere in the extensive PALMER families. John took
his family about 1790 to Brookfield, Madison County, NY. There is a John
BUTTON and Anna PALMER marriage in 1790 in Westerly, RI, on the LDS search
site. I tend to think this is my John BUTTON and that he, at about 34 years
of age, married a substantially younger Anna PALMER; their first child was
born in 1791 and they continued to have children over the next two decades. I
can find no evidence that this John BUTTON served in the Rev War although he
would have been of prime age to do so.
BUTTON, John, born 1749 Plainfield CT, but supposedly also took his family
from RI to Brookfield, Madison County, NYS in the early 1790s. This John
BUTTON supposedly married Anna COON (McCOON, MACCOONE, etc.) These two John
BUTTONs are cousins. This John BUTTON served in the Rev War from RI.
What irks me is that all of the information on John BUTTON who moved from RI
to NY seems to be about the one born 1749 CT, not the one born 1756 RI, who
was my ancestor. Please send me anything you can find on John BUTTONs who
lived in this period; I may be able to glean something from it that would
clear up the mixing of information about these two John BUTTONs. BUTTON
researchers have been trying to solve this problem for years, so far without
success, as far as I know.
PALMITER (PALMETER, PALMETTER, etc.), Elizabeth, who was born Dec 13, 1725
Westerly to Jonathan PALMITER born Jan 15, 1702/03 and Penelope SATTERLEE
born about 1700 Westerly. Jonathan and Penelope were married Jan 21, 1720/21
Westerly. Elizabeth PALMETER and Daniel BUTTON were married Sep 24, 1744
Westerly, parents of John BUTTON above
HARRINGTON, Hannah, born about 1812, married Ferdinand ELLIS born about 1813.
They married April 27, 1840, New Lisbon, Otsego Co., NY, and lived most of
their married lives in New Berlin, Chenango County, NY. I have no more info
about Hannah, but I have seen a lot of messages about HARRINGTON on this list
lately and think Hannah may have come from a family that moved from RI to NYS.
Thanks very much, Judy, for looking up these names.

Dear Judy:
Several of my lines lived in RI and moved to NYS. May I give you their
surnames and ask for their full names that appear in the index, and then, if
their full names appear in the index, ask for the information on the CD about
them?
If you prefer some other method, please let me know. I think there may be
multiple instances of these names and I am trying to ask you for as little
work as possible.
Thanks.
Jayne

Jayne,
I'd be happy to look up your surnames in the index and send you all of the
index pages that apply. I can only do it after hours and on weekends,
though!

Yes it is cute but it does not belong on this kist, I'm sure that I will
recieve at least one complaint about it.
Due to the number of complaints that I receive in private emails I am
changing my policy a little bit
>From now on if any person posts something that is definitely off topic I will
send that person a warning, if there is a second offense they risk being
banned from this list.
If in doubt ask me before posting it.

Sorry to be so slow about responding, Sam!
I checked the RI Roots CD for the Fraga surname and didn't find any listing
in the index.

I found this on a joke list but thought it was so revelant:
Some years ago an English preacher is reported to have said to his
congregation: "Our forefathers did without sugar until the thirteenth
century; without coal fires until the fourteenth century; without
battered bread until the fifteenth century; without potatoes until the
sixteenth century; without coffee, tea, and soup until the seventeenth
century; without pudding until the eighteenth century; without matches
and electricity until the nineteenth century; without canned goods until
the twentieth century. Now, what are we complaining about?"

Dear Darroll,
To try to answer your question,
> ... What do you mean "3rd cousin 7 removed" ??
> How does one get removed??
Genealogy.com, at
http://www.genealogy.com/genealogy/16_cousn.html?Welcome=1041201441,
provides the following explanation:
"Your first cousins are the people in your family who have two of the same
grandparents as you. In other words, they are the children of your aunts and
uncles.
Your second cousins are the people in your family who have the same
great-grandparents as you., but not the same grandparents.
Your third cousins have the same great-great-grandparents, fourth cousins
have the same great-great-great-grandparents, and so on.
When the word "removed" is used to describe a relationship, it indicates
that the two people are from different generations. You and your first
cousins are in the same generation (two generations younger than your
grandparents), so the word "removed" is not used to describe your
relationship.
The words "once removed" mean that there is a difference of one generation.
For example, your mother's first cousin is your first cousin, once removed.
This is because your mother's first cousin is one generation younger than
your grandparents and you are two generations younger than your
grandparents. This one-generation difference equals "once removed."
Twice removed means that there is a two-generation difference. You are two
generations younger than a first cousin of your grandmother, so you and your
grandmother's first cousin are first cousins, twice removed."
Hope this helps.
Sorry, no Susannah Paine in my database. A man named Stephen Paine has
hundreds, probably thousands, of Paines from RI and MA at this site:
http://www.mossbay.com/paine/ . You might find something there.

Hi folks -
The Caleb Potter in the letter was the son of the one who was the town
clerk - not the one who actually was the clerk - the Caleb who was town clerk
had a brother Thomas but he would have been long gone by 1828!
My apologies :)
