The following was gleaned from the Strathcona mailing list and may be of
interest to those Old Comrades who wore the Strathcona or FGH hat badges in
their earlier incarnations:
FGH and Moreuil Wood Monuments
The RCD Association alerted us to the Fort Garry Horse website at
<
http://www.fortgarryhorse.ca/> http://www.fortgarryhorse.ca which contains
a number of items that are of interest to Strathconas.
Canadian Cavalry Brigade Monuments
Strathconas will find the article on the Canadian Cavalry Brigade Monuments
to be particularly interesting. It was on June 9th of this year, that the
Fort Garry Horse dedicated a monument at Moreuil Wood. The article goes on
to say that, "from the site you can see Rifle Wood and the corner of Moreuil
Wood where Lt Gordon Flowerdew, VC led his squadron into the advancing
German lines. Plaques on the surfaces of the monument describe the Canadian
Cavalry Brigade, the Battles of March 30 and April 1, 1918, and the actions
of Lt Flowerdew and his squadron."
The article also points out that the owner of the wood, M. Brunel, unveiled
a small monument that he had constructed on the site where, in 1986, he
found the remains of Tpr John Willoughby, LSH, in 1986.
The Fort Gary Horse also hope that a third monument can be erected at
Guyencourt to commemorate the battle of March 27, 1917 and the action where
Lt Harvey won a VC. Are Strathconas going to be involved in this? Should
they be?
The Regular Force FGH and the LdSH(RC)
This website also contains a short history of the period when the FGH was
part of the Regular Force order of battle. This article reminds us how
closely these two Regiments were linked as key people from the Strathconas
went to the Garrys when that Regiment was formed in 1958. In December 1965,
the Strathconas replaced the Garrys at Fort Beausejour, in Iserlohn Germany.
Then in June of 1970, the Strathconas were once again re-established in
Calgary when the Fort Garry Horse was removed from the Regular Force order
of battle and its members re-badged to become Strathconas.
