You may have noted (Col, ret'd) Michel Drapeau has weighed in on the tank
issue, now that it has been officially announced that 200 pers and a sqn
would head off to the theatre forthwith. He says not to believe the figures
and suggests that 400 pers for the tank sqn, which would incl all its
1st/2nd line maint etc, is more accurate.
What he may not know is that tank sqns dropped to 15 vice 19 tanks some
years ago. Our HQ here had asked for several pieces of serious army eqpt
for a major public affairs and recruiting drive in early October in
Victoria. We were told some time ago not to expect any tanks since they
might be "engaged" elsewhere.
I also note that Lew Mackenzie has weighed in (ie. criticized) the value of
tanks in Afghanistan -- but based on the headlines and what he actually says
in the article, it appears his comments were taken out of context.
(and, FWIW, my congrats to Norm for his fine work as well)
