Subject: JOIN THE CDA INSTITUTE/JOIGNEZ L'INSTITUT DU CAD
Dear Colleagues:
Over the past months I have been sending you some information on defence and
security issues. As you have been able to gather, the Conference of Defence
Associations (CDA) and the CDA Institute are deeply involved in defence and
security issues, and thought you might be interested in learning more about
the CDA and the CDA Institute.
The Conference of Defence Associations (CDA) is a voluntary, non-profit,
non-partisan organization founded in 1932, representing thirty-one
associations with a membership of more than 600,000 from all parts of the
country. Its aim is to monitor and to study the problems of national defence
and security issues, and to promote pro-defence and security issues
including the welfare of the CF. Established in 1987, the Conference of
Defence Associations Institute (CDAI), a charitable organization, is the
security and defence studies arm of the CDA. It is dedicated to increasing
public awareness of Canada=s security and defence situation, and carries out
its mandate by conducting seminars, symposia, and studies, and publishes
their results. As an example, in the last year (2001-2002) the CDA/CDAI has
been involved in the following:
Release of CDAI research project A NATION AT RISK: The Decline of the CF
(see the full report at:
www.cda-cdai.ca);
CDAI produces its quarterly newsletter ON TRACK (available online at:
www.cda-cdai.ca);
CDAI held its annual Vimy Award and Dinner on 15 November 2002, at the
Canadian Museum of Civilization, Gatineau;
This year saw the creation of the Ross Munro Media Award as well;
The 5th Annual CDAI Graduate Student Symposium was held on 1-2 November
2002;
The 18th CDAI Annual Seminar, ACombat Capability and the CF,@ and 65th CDA
Annual General Meeting ware held in February 2002 at the Chateau Laurier
Hotel, Ottawa;
CDA has appeared in front of House Standing Committees of Finance, Defence
and Veterans Affairs, and the Senate Committee of Defence;
CDA has received extensive media coverage from all the national news, print,
TV, and radio agencies in Canada; and
In recent years, the CDA has acquired new members such as the Royal Canadian
Legion, the Naval Officers= Association of Canada (NOAC), the Navy League of
Canada and the Air Force Association of Canada (AFAC).
These types of activities must continue if the CDA Institute is going to be
relevant and successful in carrying out its mandate of educating Canadians
about what constitutes an effective defence policy, and contributing to the
effectiveness and welfare of the CF. For our work to continue, we need to
increase the individual membership/donor base of the CDA Institute. This has
become more urgent with the recent announcement by the Minister of National
Defence that CDA will be losing its DND grant three years earlier than
originally planned. I ask you to consider becoming a member of the
Institute and encourage others to do the same as well.
For more information on becoming a member of the CDA Institute go to the
CDA/CDAI website (
www.cda-cdai.ca), and fill our on-line application form
today. As a member, you will receive studies and research projects conducted
by the CDAI such as A NATION AT RISK, CDAI=s quarterly newsletter ON TRACK,
and a membership rate to the CDAI Annual Seminar.
