Hi all, I was wondering the same thing about Linton and Hodder. Knew
some by the same name when I was 8CH.
Have a great holiday season

Hi Paul,
Not sure about Cleveland but the Mercer is Sterling's son (and spitting
image, I might add).
Have a great Christmas and all the best in the New Year.

Did a double-take when I saw the names Mercer and Cleveland below --
both
of
which were at those (and various other ranks) in both RCD and 8CH when
I
was
still active with armour units.
I wonder if they are any relation?
Hope you are well.

The Regt has been very busy.
D Sqn (Maj Tremblay and SSM Mercer) and the Tank Troop (Lt Peitzch and
WO Cleveland) continues to be deployed in Afghanistan with an end of
tour date being some time in Late March. I visited them in theatre
20-24 Nov and found them all to be in good spirits and conducting
operations with the professionalism and high level of skill that one
would expect from Dragoons. We have sustained some injuries from IED
Strikes but all soldiers are recovering. Tpr Linton injured his back
in an IED strike in Oct and is rehabilitating in Kitchener with his
mom and dad by his side. Tpr Woodley, injuring his ankle in the same
attack is healing in Petawawa. While I was in Afghanistan C/S 69E was
struck by an IED injuring three Dragoons and Five others who were in
the back of the LAV III. The Crew Commander MCpl Snyder had a badly
broken arm and he is being treated in Ottawa Civic Hospital. Cpl
Hodder, the driver, injured his back and he is recovering with his
family in Petawawa. Cpl Scheerd broke some ribs but remained in
theatre. All are doing well and the sqn performed all its drills in
an exceptional manner getting MEDIVAC Black Hawks on the scene within
6 mins.
B Sqn (Maj Popov and SSM Mathers) is the next sqn in the hopper and is
scheduled to deploy in Sep 09. They have been training hard in on
the
ranges in Petawawa and in the RMA near Arnprior and in the Meaford
Area. They will continue with their mission specific training and are
scheduled to go to Western Area to meet up with the 1 PPCLI BG in
April and May for their confirmation exercises.
A Sqn (Maj MacLaughlan and SSM Pichie) will deploy as the Recce Sqn
for 1 RCR in Mar 10. They are still focussed on supporting B Sqn as
they ramp up for deployment and they are supporting the Brigade by
running several Turret Operator Courses.
HQ Sqn (Maj Renahan and SSM Ferguson) continue to support the Regt in
the same outstanding manner that it always has done in the past.
C Sqn (Maj Wilson and SSM Ward) remain with the 2 RCR BG in Gagetown.
They are doing outstanding work with limited resources and just
recently completed a Recce focussed exercise that the COR, RSM and I
visited last week.
As far as the next bound goes, a great deal of effort will be going
towards the manning of the OMLT for TF 1-10 which will also deploy in
Mar 10. The RSM and I have been tasked as the Command Team to lead
the OMLT and we will try our best to bring as many Dragoons along as
we can. The Regt will be fully committed.
Life in Petawawa is great although we are already getting weary of the
snow. Silly season is fully upon us with Sqn Christmas Parties this
week, subbie carolling on Saturday and the Hockey challenge, Men's
Christmas Dinner and Sr NCOs at Home to the Officer's coming up next
week.
Have a wonderful holiday season and the RSM and I look forward to
seeing you again early in 2009.
Marty
