hello,
my name is tom de jong, i live in friesland, the netherlands.
searching for items about ww2 i found this site and i would like to send a mail to tell
you something about my grandpa.
he was a member of the resistance and during the liberation of friesland (a part of
holland in the north) he was by the dutch army (the NBS) who hold a bridge for the
canadian liberators and i found out that our liberators are the Canadian Dragoons. that
bridge was very importend for the canadian army, if the bridge was free from germans they
could liberate the whole part of north-netherlands.
the operation had the codename "the bottle is empty", started at 10 april 1945
in the village Appelscha and was supported by French paratroopers. 14 april the canadian
liberators arrived by the bridge on the road to Dokkum and 17 april the whole part of
Friesland was liberated.
still, every year on 14 april, the kids from school remember the action of the NBS and the
canadians by the bridge with flowers.
i hope you like this information and if you have any information about the action
"the bottle is empty" i hope you would mail me.
if you want i can send you picture's about the bridge in 1945 and now.
with kind regards, mr Tom de Jong.
