None is a finer day to be a Dragoon than Leliefontein Day!
This day, Dragoons in various locations around the world are gathering to
mark the occasion of the 106th Anniversary of that the Action at Leliefontein:
A Squadron in Afghanistan, B Squadron in Wainwright preparing for the
February 2007 rotation to relieve A Squadron in theatre, elements of RHQ and D
Squadron in Wainwright supporting B Squadron’s preparations and the remainder in
Petawawa, including HQ Squadron fresh off exercise supporting our militia
colleagues. Gatherings are also taking place elsewhere around the globe from
Europe to the US to several centres across Canada -- wherever Dragoons are
located.
Of course, we gather on this day to mark the service in action of three fine
Dragoons who did us all proud that day 106 years ago. This year we
restructured the format of the celebrations in order to permit the Regiment to
participate properly in the ceremonies marking the service in action of three other
fine Dragoons: Sgt Gillam, Cpl Mitchell and Tpr Wilson. They were fine
soldiers - each one of them. We shall remember them!
I also noted with great pride the manner in which the Regimental Family
pulled together in support of those in their time of need. This not only included
serving members of the Regiment, but also several Dragoons serving ERE and
several members of the RCD Association who attended the various ceremonies
across the country during early- to mid-October. This participation, whether in
various locations Ontario or in Newfoundland, was a tremendous support to the
families of these fine men. I thank those who came forth and provided their
support – this is truly what a Regimental Family is all about!
We have also had other Fallen Comrades this year, as former Dragoons pass
away in their later years. Again, in these instances, the Regimental Family
across the country gathers to support those in their time of need. Thank you,
again, to all those who put forth this effort.
All the very best to all Dragoons as we mark Leliefontein 2006! I also pass
along greetings from our Colonel-in-Chief, who sends his best wishes to the
Regiment and to Dragoons everywhere as we mark this occasion.
To all Dragoons: God bless - take care – and good shooting!
