Hi Red and Jean:
Below is a copy of the speech that I delivered Saturday, November 1, 2008 at the Royal
Canadian Legion in Kelligrews in honor of my dear friend, John F. (Jack) Scott. Hope you
enjoy.
God Bless you both,
Jack M. Guest Speaker, Chairman Wayne Miller Head Table Guests, Ladies and Gentleman
I speak to you tonight on a truly great man. A man who had a vision--a dream--a burning
desire==a Man who wanted to see all deceased MILITARY RECOGNIZED for the unselfish acts
they performed in protecting the freedom of our country.
John had a long and distinguished career of 21 years in serving Canada, and, Indeed
those who cherished freedom around the world.
John retired in 1977 from the Canadian armed forces.. He always spoke highly of his
comrades, particulary those who where in Harms Way. His interest heightened even more
after the Afghanistan war broke out. He defended the Canadian presence to the hilt--and
did until the day he died.
The CBS veterans memorial cross project was Johns brainchild. He pioneered the project
in Newfoundland 3 years ago. All deceased veterans who served our country would be honored
with a cross and a flag on their grave--and today that numbers 260 graves in this town.
Myself and Carl LeDrew agreed to lend a hand to John and his project.
John left us on July 28th of this year. On the day of his funeral I placed a cross and
flag on his grave--a fitting tribute to the man who brought this project to Newfoundland.
It was a difficult duty but I was proud to salute a man of conviction and much purpose.
John called Wayne Miller, Bill Dawe and myself together on a Saturday Morning just a
couple of weeks before his death. He was very concerned that the project would survive.
And, at the end of our little meeting, we had no problem in assuring John that we would
honor his wishes, today, tomorrow, forever. I know John felt at peace with the future of
the project at the end of our chat--and we cannot and will not let him down!
This tiny cross may seem insignificant, but I say to all of you, when you pass a
cemetery in CBS you will know that my friend John Scott was responsible for highlighting
the final resting places of all those who SERVED THEIR COUNTRY!
John was a member of the CBS Monument of Honor COMMITTEE and was active until the time
his illness. He would be very humbled today, knowing that the 1st phase of this project is
near completion. I attended with him the last number of years, including last year at
Topsail and I know he would have been honored to attend the new site at Kittys Ade Turn
this Year. I will say that when I go to the remembrance day service 10 days from now,
Johns spirit will be by my side---every step of the way.
In conclusion, I will simply say---
John Scott was a PROUD CANADIAN---A PROUD SOLDIER.
Thank You.
