We are saddened to report the death of a good comrade for many years. D1548 Cpl Lewis
John CONWAY, MM. born 15 Jun 1919..Lew passed away at Toronto Western Hospital suddenly in
the early AM of 1 May 06, He was a great soldier and a wonderful man....On 12 April of
1945 near Zwolle in the Netherlands as his scout car approached a woods, he saw a number
of Germans break from their trenches..Cpl Conway dismounted and carrying a Sten Gun dashed
into the woods and forced 13 enemy out of their trenches. He then continued the chase
after the enemy seen running northwest. Although he was no longer under the support of the
Armourd cars' guns he caught up with a group of 10 enemy and forced them to surrender.
During this time he was under fire from an enemy light machine gun located north of his
position. As soon as his prisoners had been taken back to the Armoured cars. Cpl Conway
raced back to his radio set, picked up a rifle and kneeling in the open engaged the
enemy's LMG. His rif!
le fire was so accurate that the LMG stopped firing. After he had indicated its position
to his Troop Ldr it was engaged by the 37 mm cannon of an armoured car and knocked out by
a direct hit and the crew of three killed. About this time Cpl Conway was wounded in the
thigh by a large piece of concrete that had been hit beside him, but he continued firing
until his rifle was empty...(Thus read his citation for the Military Medal) ..Lew will be
at Hillcrest Funeral Home Vankleek Hill from 7 to 9 PM Thursday 4 May and 2 to 5 and 7 to
9PM on Friday with Funeral Mass being held on Saturday 6 May 06 at St Eugene. Condolences
