Sirs, Ladies and Gentlemen, on behalf of the Director of Armour, it is my sad duty
to inform you of the passing of MGen (Ret'd) Howard this morning in Calgary.
Funeral arrangements will be confirmed, but it is expected to occur Monday or
Tuesday of next week (20 or 21 June) in Calgary. I will advise via these means once
confirmation is received as well as any details I receive regarding donations, flowers,
expressions of sympathy, etc. The King's Own Calgary Regiment has the lead with
regard to the funeral and maintaining contact with the Howard family. Official
notification will be made through LFWA and forwarded to NDHQ. A biographical sketch

University of Alberta, (B.A. 1940, LL.B., 1941) member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity).
Read law with W.H. McLaws, Q.C., Calgary, called to the Bar of Alberta, 1942 and created
Q.C. 1955. Commenced the practice of his profession with McLaws, Cairns and McLaws,
Calgary, 1946; associated with J.M. Cairns (later the Honourable Mr. Justice J.M. Cairns)
as Cairns & Howard, 1947-51; Mahaffy & Howard, 1951-57; Senior Partner Howard,
Mackie, 1958 to 1993, currently Counsel to Howard, Mackie. Member of Calgary Bar
Association (Past President); Canadian Bar Association; Law Society of Alberta.
Prior to enlisting in the active service, had been a member of Canadian Officers
Training Corps (University of Alberta) and subsequently a member of 15th Alberta Light
Horse and The Calgary Regiment. Enlisted in the active service as a Lieutenant with Royal
Canadian Armoured Corps in 1942 (31st Alberta Reconnaissance Regiment), served overseas
from January 1945 to August 1946; gazetted Captain 1944, on discharge from Canadian active
Service Forces joined The King's Own Calgary Regiment (Militia) in October 1954 became
Commanding Officer of the King's Own Calgary Regiment in October 1954; subsequently
appointed Commander 22 Militia Group in 1961 and appointed Brigadier in 1963; appointed
Militia Advisor (Western Canada) to the Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff (Reserves) on
January 1, 1965, Canadian Forces Headquarters, Ottawa 1965; appointed Major General,
