As we mark our Regimental Birthday, perhaps a brief reflection of the 124th
year of the Dragoon Family may be worthwhile ....
One year ago today, A Squadron was deployed overseas and were performing
admirably, in spite of the losses suffered two months earlier. Now that the
Squadron has been home for a while, the true extent of their contribution is
better known - and has been recognized by a rare sub-unit commendation. That
contribution continued when A Squadron was relieved by B Squadron in February.
The contribution made by B Squadron was nothing short of outstanding, again in
spite of a few very bad days. Today, most Dragoons are at home, except for a
tank troop which is ably led by Chris Duncan and for several individuals
serving in various national or international staff positions. We all pray that
they all remain safe during the remainder of their tour.
The year was also eventful in our Association. There was a most successful
Reunion in Windsor in June which marked a change in leadership as Chris
Sproule, after doing sterling work during the past few years, was replaced by Bann
Price. Association gatherings continued as per normal; however, it is the
support that Association members gave to serving Dragoons during recent
difficult times which I would like to point out - that support was greatly
appreciated.
The Guild continues to support activities in the Regiment, the Association
and elsewhere whenever it can -- and continues to seek your support in doing
so. I won't list the current projects, as there are many and information about
them can be seen on the web site. The Trust Fundraising Campaign is solidly
launched under the leadership of Mark Hutchings, who is ably supported by Dave
Batten and others.
Without a doubt, our 124th year of service was quite active and eventful. We
should expect nothing less from our 125th year of service. D Squadron has
already begun preparations for deployment in late-Summer/early-Fall, a
Change-of-Command ceremony is scheduled for late-June and there will be a wide
variety of events in support of the celebrations of our 125th - the main event of
which is a joint RCD-RCR parade on Parliament Hill on Saturday 7 June,
followed by a Gala Ball at the Museum of Civilization. I certainly hope to see many
of you there!
Happy 124th Birthday to Dragoons everywhere!
I also want to wish everyone a most Merry Christmas and all the very best to
you and your families throughout 2008.
Mike
