Dear Mr. Barwise
We are living in a small village called Holten in the Netherlands. This
might sound familiar to you because of the Canadian War Cemetary in Holten.
Today the 4th of May is the national memorial day in the Netherlands and
my daughter has attended an official memorial service at the cemetary
because of the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands.
The Netherlands is been liberated as of 5th May 1944 and Holten as of 8
Apr 1944.
My daughter has laid flowers on some graves and the 1st one is the grave
of Trooper J.F. Winter (M105614) died on 8 Apr 1944. Trooper JF Winter
was part of the Royal Canadian Dragoons.
We would be pleased if you could pass our gratitiudes to the relatives
of JF Winter and tell them his grave and the whole cemetary is
maintained well. Also should they know the sacfrice of JF Winter will
be remembered for ever more.
Last night our daughter of 9 wrote the following poem. The 1st part is
in dutch and the 2nd part is a translation into English.
Canadezen wij zijn blij
dat wij kunnen spelen
en met iedereen kunnen delen
en niet worden gedood door een maloot
dat wij niet een kamp worden gebracht
en daar om het leven worden gebracht
Canadian we are happy
because of we can play and
share with others
because of we won't be killed
by a crazy man
and we won't be brought to
camps were our lives are taken away.
