Subject: Maureen's Illness
I'm sorry to report that Maureen is seriously ill in the ICU at Lyon's
Gate Hospital. She was admitted a week ago Tuesday with a severe back spasm
with no apparent cause. It was extremely painful and stressful and later
determined to be a fractured vertebra and morphine was providing some
relief. She was discovered to be somewhat anemic from an internal bleeding
problem, but a colonoscopy found the source, it was cauterized and she had
some blood transfused.
Sunday night she was having some trouble breathing, but early Monday she
stopped breathing and had a cardiac arrest. She was resuscitated and taken
to the ICU where they stabilized her and put her under heavy sedation. She
requires a respirator to keep her breathing. The doctors hope that during
this stabilization period her vital organs (liver and kidneys) will regain
enough function to allow them to bring her out of sedation to see if she can
breathe on her own. We can only wait and see how this stage develops. It
appears the pulmonary fibrosis had advanced rather quickly; this put
additional pressure on her heart and liver, and it appears the stress of the
back injury contributed to an over-load.
Our family has gathered and we ask for your prayers.
Ernie
