how well I remember George McRay. He was PMC of the Combat Arms School in
Borden in the fall of 1968. I had been sent down to the School after my
first Nrth Bay posting in the Hole to be Mess Secretary to replace Carl
Cowden who had broken his leg or something. That was an episode in my life
I'll never forget. A new CI had just arrive and he looked at everything
with a gimlet eye. It was no a happy time Bill Sutherland had moved on back
to Quebec and the Mess Staff did not know how to handle George like they did
Big Bill. There was a Vandoo who knew how to pull enough strings to make
anything Army wise happen the way he wanted it to happen. I am off the
subject of George here but I remem ber the famous farewell breakfast the
Mess thre Don Holmes on his departure, Everyone was dressed in Pyjamas,
someone was served raw eggs with their bacon and theupshot was that the
whole gang marched Don home to the Married quarters with, and I can'
remember the Capts name playing the pipes and myself playing the RCR
marhcpast over and over on an old one valve trumpet. I remembervthe Mess at
that time had some wonderful Eskimo carvings scattered throughout the mess
which had been rescued from Fort Churchill when the Mess was disbanded
there. cI often wonder what happened to them. I was recued from that infernl
Secretary's position by Don and sent to Meaford as range control officer
under Black Pat Patterson.d
