Margaret Harvey,
Re. Hydan.
I gather that when checking cropmark enclosures, which were on the route of the planned
A458 road, engineers, or others, found indications of archaeological interest there. I
guess that means they found evidence of some ancient habitation, but does that site
delineate the present-day locality of Hydan? At this stage I can't place either on a
map.
The only "Hydan" I can find is "Fron Hydan", which apparently means
"Hydan Hillside."
It would be interesting to know whether your ancient community influenced the naming of
the present-day area.
Many thanks for your email.
Bob H.
John Ball,
Re. Hydan place names,
Thanks John for your explanation re. farm names. I have been to your site and found it
fascinating. The sound effects department had me practising all my Welsh place-names; my
wife came running from watching TV to find what all the noise was about.
Really, I think it's excellent.
Is it safe to conclude that all those Hydans would have been located roughly where the
present day Fron Hydan is?
While searching Bishops Transcripts for Castle Caereinion, I came across lots of Hydans.
My particular g.etc.father's abode was Hydan & Dôl. What is the significance of
the "&"?
You've put a huge amount of effort into this haven't you.
Thanks, Bob H.
While I'm at it, does anyone know if it's possible for the public to view old
"Tythe Maps" of Wales?
