Hello Alison and anyone who's interested in POWELLs and farms around Builth
Wells.
From the 1851/61 censuses so kindly provided by Powys FHS:
Tynwain, Llanddewi'r Cwm:
In 1851 and 1861: POWELL Hugh 62/72 (BRE Llanddewi'r Cwm) and Anne, plus
daughter Rebecca aged 18/28. In 1861 we have son David aged 25 as well (BRE
Llanynis).
Noyadd, Llanddewi'r Cwm:
In 1851: POWELL Thomas 31 (BRE Llanddewi'r Cwm) and Mary. Don't have a note
of 1861.
IGI Batch C089631 has 8 children born to Hugh and Ann POWELL. My Margaret
appears the eldest (chr 1816), and there are Thomas (chr 1819), David (chr
1835) and Rebecca (chr 1832), so I think this must be them.
Some other POWELL farms dotted about this area I've noticed, who may be
related:
Llanynis: Berllanber and Esghirerynwydd. Not Abercynithon though - Prices
there.
Maesmynis: Noyadd Hendre, Brenhihle or Brinhinye, Noyadd Ucha, Trowstir
and/or Trawshie, New Building, Abertochen and Noyadd Sharmon
It's interesting that some families seemed to have moved "down the road" to
another farm between 1851 and 1861 - perhaps it was common then, but it's
not always a son that takes over. My Margaret married Philip MEREDITH in
1838, and they and Philip's family farmed (among others) Maes-Y-Cwm Llandd
Cwm, Erwhelem Maesmynis, Penrhiw Llanynis and Bryndinod Rhosferig.
Regards
Ann
