Hi Ruth
as if Gwenddwr was a later
name for Llaneglwys
Gwenddwr village and church are several miles from Llaneglwys.
Gwenddwr parish once had two or more detached portions. I believe
one of those is now incorporated in Llandefalle parish. Some land in
the area once belonged to the Abbey d'Or (Cistercian), in Golden
Valley, Herefordshire.
would like to know whether there were/are
TWO churches
Ramah Baptist Chapel, which was not built until 1855, is a small
attractive building at the end of a lane near Llaneglwys. This was
an offshoot of Hephzibah Baptist Chapel, in Erwood (first recorded
minister 1830).
In case it is of interest - Powys FHS (Brecknock Group) have
published the Ramah and Hephzibah MIs on microfiche, as well as
others in the area - St Mary's Church in Wales, Crucadarn; Hebron
Congregational (circa 1812); Bryn Zion Chapel (built 1888); St
Dubricious Church in Wales, Gwenddwr; and Beili-Heulog
Congregational (United Reformed - built 1690s).

Subject: [POWYS] Gwenddwr & Llaneglwys BRE
Dear Listers
I wonder if someone with local knowledge could help me sort out a
problem I
have regarding the location(s) above.
I am trying to find the baptisms of the children of a Simon Lewis
said to
have lived (approx 1780-1830) at Blainau, Gwenddwr - in some
documents - and
Blainau, Llaneglwys - in others. When I enquired at the NLW about
the PRs of
Llaneglwys, I was referred to the Gwenddwr ones as if Gwenddwr was
a later
name for Llaneglwys, but I still have some doubts and would like to
know
whether there were/are TWO churches - even if the PRs have only
survived for
Gwenddwr.
I think these places are probably somewhere near your doorstep,
Mike, so
perhaps you know the answer!!
Many thanks in advance.
Regards, Ruth
