Hi,
The following naming patterns have come from the excellent book "The
Surnames of Wales" by John and Sheila Rowlands which shows that Wales and
Scotland use the same system.
First son named after paternal grandfather
Second son after maternal grandfather
First daughter after maternal grandmother
Second daughter after paternal grandmother
The names of the parents and of uncles and aunts were then honoured. The
practice was common until the mid-ninteenth century
They add that this procedure was not inevitable and there are examples of
recently deceased relations being commemorated out of turn. It is also of
dubious benefit where the same few names are repeated in several
generations.
I have cases in my own family when a child has been given the same name as
an older brother or sister who died young which sometimes explains why ages
can be wrong on the censuses.
I hope this helps
Regards,
Margaret Harvey

Hi Helen
Thanks for that,

apply
it across the board.
